I watch programmes like BAFTA because I enjoy them. I'm very interested in the entertainment world. It would be a dull place without it. I certainly wasn't keen on Rebel Wilson's presentation style though.

I watch it because my 12 year old autistic grandson's obsession is the cinema and has been for some years now. He is a mine of information on all things film related and if he asks me a question or wants to have a discussion he expects Granny to know.

She must be a good character actor as you remember the character not her.

I agree re Salma Chestnut. What a beautiful dress. I had a similar one back in the 70s when maxi dresses were fashionable for parties.

My claim to fame is that I know Joanna Scanlon's younger brother, he's a lovely chap. If you google her you can see she's been in loads of stuff from Doc Martin, The Other Boleyn Girl, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and The Larkins and masses of other TV appearances. She must be a good character actor as you remember the character not her.

@maddyone. I have to disagree with you in your comment that actors do absolutely unimportant jobs. I think we all realised during the last two years the power and joy that cinema, theatre and drama can give us, and how much we all missed theatre and similar events.
I agree that this year’s host was cringe worthy but have to admire all film productions with what they have achieved during the restrictions of Covid and am grateful that cinema has continued to touch, educate,entertain, and offer escape from the terrible times we live in.
I could go on to thank Tom Dick and Harry, but those thank you speeches were as usual mostly too long so won’t add to the tedium. Authors get prizes, why shouldn’t actors?

Selma Hayek is Hollywood royalty - an actress, producer and director. She was in ‘Ugly Betty’ if anyone remembers that show. An impressive figure! Rebel Wilson, meanwhile, is an Australian comedy actress - might have been in Bridesmaids or similar? When five stone heavier, frequently on Graham Norton show.....

I accidentally saw some of this while I was doing something else. I take it that Rebel was the woman in the red dress who was reaching new levels of cringeworthiness. If that's not a word then it should be! I don't remember much of what I saw except for a few women with boobs leaping out of dresses. I switched over pretty quickly.

I have no idea who she is either. At a guess, I thought she may be the daughter of one of the beach boys.

Amongst the weirdly dressed and unattractive people on the stage suddenly appeared a vision of loveliness. A 55 year old lady called Salma Hayek announced an award. She was not only stunningly beautiful with a gorgeous figure but even had a fabulous purple dress which fitted her perfectly. She looked like old Hollywood glamour and outshone them all! Surrounded by cheap looking dresses, tattoos and Botox faces she looked a total vision.

I usually record these ceremonies and then can fast-forward all the boring bits. This time I sat through Rebel Wilson just to see whether she could be any more toe-curling than she started off. And she kept it up all the way through! Utter bilge. Her jokes fell flat and she just kept going. She was trying to be edgy like Gervais and it didn't work, she's just not funny.

Thankfully, I don't think she paid tribute to her vaginal steaming thingy though so that was a bit of a godsend no one really wants the sort of over sharing she's given the world lately.

If you ever see any old Oscar ceremonies, I’m talking 1940’s/1950’s, the winner just accepted their award with a modest smile and a few gracious words of thanks.

These award ceremonies are always awful so I never watch any of them. I have no interest in seeing people being praised by their peers and I have always felt sorry for any member of the RF who is obliged to sit through them, knowing any eye roll or yawn will be caught by cameras. Self indulgent crap
