Well the Paedophile Information Exchange were openly promoting themselves at that time. They were hitching a ride on the sexual revolution, hoping that even their depravity would be deemed acceptable. There was so much sexual freedom around at the time they probably thought it was a good time to make a move. Well it seems everything else became acceptable but not that. Following the sexual revolution the only two things that did not enter the realm of 'normal behaviour' were rape and paedophilia. And so we are where we are today.

Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story
(65 Posts)Will anybody be watching this on Netflix? The Independent was quite scathing, The Guardian gave it a good review. I’m undecided, the sight of him makes me feel queasy but I feel like there’s an awful lot still being hushed up.
Makes you wonder how many of those in high office at the time actually sympathised with him or were that way inclined themselves. You used to hear about various judges being like that and dismiss it but maybe there actually was some truth in it. I totally wouldn’t be surprised.
Peadophiles regularly defend their abuse by claiming the child enjoyed it, sought it out, seduced them, they were lovers etc. Chestnut, it will have been The Paedophile Information Exchange .
I watched that episode of the Mary Whitehouse programme too Chestnut and was astonished that the 2 paedophiles were so open about their sexual attraction to young children and how they truly believed that children should be encouraged to participate in their depravity. They made my skin crawl.
<not envy>
welbeck the idea of girls of 12 and 13 being able to consent to sex was promoted publicly by a group who were trying to make paedophilia legal. It was part of the Mary Whitehouse programme on recently. Of course she was fighting them tooth and nail, she certainly had her good points. I can't remember the name of the group but the paedos were actually saying in public how it should be legal! You really can't believe some of the things that went on.
yes, complete injustice. talk about adding insult to injury. and labelling them by that oxymoron, child prostitute. victim blaming, supporting the perps.
on another site, a person argues that women of age 12 or 13 ought to be able to consent to sexual relationships. women. of 12 or 13.
Welbeck - The chief constable of Greater Manchester made a formal apology the the women who were victims of the grooming gangs as children. This was in the 1990’s - social workers, beat bobbies, health workers were all raising organised child sexual abuse with senior managers, no effective action taken. Children of 12 ‘making poor lifestyle choices’. They were coerced, terrified, threatened with guns. They were criminalised. One was convicted of driving unqualified, without a licence - I can’t recall if she was also under the influence. Her abusers men I their 40’s in the car with her. She’s barred from pursuing a career in social care as a result.
not that long ago the idea that a man liked young girls was viewed as almost funny, akin to drinking a bit too much, being a bit of a lad, a rogue.
nobody considered what the young girls thought about it, almost as if they were just an inanimate foil to the rogue's habits.
women didn't matter much, and girls mattered even less.
He lived in a little cottage around the corner from my ex in his later years, and everyone in the village hated him.
(Savile, not the ex
)
I know someone who lived in Scarborough many years ago - Savile had a lot of connections there.
When her children were looking for p/t / summer jobs, a number of people warned her not to allow them to work for certain people, all connected to Savile.
I couldn’t stand him either. Boasting about his conquests with young girls was an effective smoke screen though. He was so unappealing we just thought, Who are you kidding?
I'm wondering who did actually like him.
I thought he was grotesque, and I was a child, and my mum couldn't stand him.
I think secretly, nobody could stand him.
I met Savile twice when he used to help on the tea counter at Stoke Mandeville hospital. He was very creepy always touching women when he spoke to them. Yuk.
One thing to bear in mind is that mostly these horrific offences occurred in the past, where they do things differently. There's a little clip where he obviously assaults a young girl while recording Top of the Pops. It was just laughed off, nowadays he would be fired and in court. The recording is in the program, it there for all to see yet nothing happened as far as I know.
Growing up in the 60s and 70s, I could not bear to watch Savile. He was odd, creepy and, quite frankly, boring. He had nothing to say, all silly noises and catch phrases. I could never understand why people adored and fawned over him. So I had to force myself to watch this documentary and though it made my flesh crawl, I am glad I did. Because I have always tried to avoid any TV programme he was on, much of the footage was new to me. It is astonishing that he got away with this his entire life, using his so-called good works to provide him with a constant stream of people, young and old, to sexually assault. Just as Selina Scott said that the camera does lie, so it goes to prove that you can fool all of the people all of the time. Or was it that the establishment protected him? When you have royalty, prime minsters and popes eating out of your hand you can get away with anything. It was well known in BBC circles that he “liked young girls”. Why was he never investigated in his lifetime? Because he had the police in his pocket too? Why were West Yorkshire police in regular attendance at his Friday parties? It was all so rotten.
I never got the way people seemed to almost fall over themselves to support this weird man. Rolf Harris, yes I could understand that, because he has a certain artistic talent and always superficially seemed a decent sort but Savile, no. He always looked and acted in a nasty, creepy way with his horrible hair and makeup.
There have always been creepy blokes around.
When I was 12 and at the girls' grammar school, our middle aged headmistress married an elderly man who scared us. He would linger outside the school in the afternoons and try to chat up the girls as we left, or touch us on the arm as we went by. He was leery. We used to laugh about him and run past, or leave by a different exit, but it does make you wonder whether he married the headmistress of a girls' school in order to have what seemed legitimate access to 750 girls.
It has always perplexed me that his name is pronounced as Saville which I think needs 2 L’s I think the way his name is written is SaVILE.. So very appropriate..
Laura How can you forget all these evil people? They need to be remembered so lessons will be learnt. Maybe that's just wishful thinking, as the evil never actually go away, but we do need to learn from them. Anyway, judging by the number of programmes on evil people shown on TV I think you're fighting a losing battle!
Chestnut, I’m pretty sure my post didn’t single out Saville, I was clear that I meant all evil monsters including Hitler, child molesters, murderers, paedophiles and hopefully soon include Putin.
People did get away with things then and victims were ignored. It was a different culture where you had to accept inappropriate behaviour. We had one very sleazy guy at work who would leer all over you and squeeze up against you if you were alone on the stairs. I complained to my boss who just laughed! I tried to avoid and never be alone with him thereafter. This was just small scale but on a larger scale you had Saville etc who were permitted by those in the know to continue with their unspeakable behaviour. It was always in the papers as well about how wonderful he was, had been a hard working miner and looked after his dear old mum all adding to the illusion of a fantastic person and didn’t he make sure we knew it. I can’t watch the programme as my flesh will crawl. Another one who was mummy’s darling boy who never married either was Cyril Smith.
PS: Also what about all the serial killers who are studied in documentaries, movies, dramas, books? The TV schedules are awash with programmes on serial killers! I'm not sure why anyone thinks Savile is so exceptionally evil that his name must never be breathed again. There are hundreds of evil people who are remembered.
LauraNorderr
Following two mass shootings, acts of terrorism and hatred, at mosques in Christchurch, NZ, Jacinda Aderne decreed that the name of the terrorist would never be said again. Denying him validation, notoriety, whatever he craved.
I’d like to see the same world over so that once dead or prosecuted the names of the evil disappeared with them.
No I won’t be watching for that reason.
I don't think that applies to people like Savile. Unlike these terrorists, he committed multiple offences over several decades. We need to keep remembering them to make sure it never happens again. What about Hitler, the worst offender of all? He is remembered ad infinitum through movies, documentaries, books. I never realised there were so many TV programmes about Hitler, they are on every day on PBS America channel. We shouldn't forget these evil people and just sweep them under the carpet.
Such a vile person so full of his own importance he thought he could get away with anything, there must be others who where doing the same and never caught.
His name should never be mentioned in the media again in my opinion.
