Am going to watch ‘The Politician’s Wife’ next, another old one that I missed first time round.

Also on All4.

Sorry to see some of you couldn’t find it.

I just went on ‘All 4’, then on to ‘search’, typed in ‘The Rector’s Wife’, and it appeared, with a picture of Prunella Scales as she is in it.

I read the book years ago, but does not seem to be available at my library now.

On a side note I loved the character of the rectors wife’s mother in the book, with her eccentric house and observant asides, I can’t remember any of the characters names save kitty her mother in law, and her friends child Ptolemy.
Funny the bits that stick in your head.
The bit about her son or daughter painting their room black stuck with me too, my son painted his pop brown ?

That sounds right up my street. Must check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.

When I read a book I have a picture in my mind if how they look, am usually disappointed when it’s a film or tv series as it rarely lives up to my expectations. I lived A Walk In The Wild by Bill Bryson but disappointed in the film.

I loved the book and enjoyed the tv series too, though the actors cast weren’t quite as I’d imagined the characters.
I really enjoy Joanna Trollops books, she paints such a picture of family relationships, women’s inner lives and rural England.

Back then, the rector’s wife was expected to practically be her husband’s deputy. Nowadays, at an interview, they are not allowed to question anything about their partner’s lives (which of course could be either sex).

How times have moved on, you forget until something reminds you how it used to be.

I remember the book, my village was so like that depicted! All the recent vicars in this village have been married with three or four children. The wives never worked. How on earth did they manage? One vicarage family even kept a horse.

After a recommendation on my tv review page, just watched the first two episodes of this 1994 drama, starring Lindsay Duncan, on All4.

Never saw it originally, a pleasant change from some of the tripe on nowadays. Also nostalgic looking back at the good old days- her supermarket job paid £3.20 an hour!

Oh happy days.
