Yet again another amazing documentary on Sky Arts. I didn’t mean to watch it but whilst channel hopping came upon it and was transfixed. It showed what a very complex relationship she had with her husband.I hated the film about her from a few years back but this was fascinating. I have seen various films about her family eg Grey Gardens and saw a play about her a few years ago that touched on the affairs that she might or might not have had. I think I’m going to end up subscribing to Sky Arts.

Thanks for the recommendation Maybee70.

Don't forget that Sky Arts became free-to-air in September 2020. No need to subscribe.

I love anything to do with Jackie Onassis, the Kennedy clan, Maria Callas etc. I’m old enough to remember how much newsprint and column space was devoted to them in the Sunday papers, many of which don’t exist nowadays.
Sky Arts have some fabulous documentaries about Camelot and that era. I always loved the way Jackie O dressed, she was so stylish and well presented even in later life.
Mind you I think if I had a few million quid to spend I might be able to emulate her style !
( Only after paying for a load of plastic surgery, a gastric band, a stylist and the elixir of eternal youth. I’ve got a pair of sunglasses and a headscarf though !)

Yes, but you have to subscribe to watch on catchup and I keep missing programmes. If BBC4 goes (which it will) Sky Arts will be my go to channel. I do wonder if they’re just getting me hooked and then it will stop being free to air.

Oh, I see what you mean MayBee70. Sky Arts is one of my favourite channels and though I can watch it through the NOW app I tend to tab though the weekly schedules via Freeview and set to record programmes in case I want to keep them. It's good to have that flexibility.

It was ages before I discovered Sky Arts by accident! Just hit upon it whilst scrolling through the channels. I know people say there’s nothing good on the telly but there don’t seem to be enough hours in the day for me to watch everything I want to. On top of that there are all the things on BBC Sounds. I nodded off watching a programme about Dennis Nielsen on Ch5 last night. Not the sort of subject matter that I would normally choose to watch but it fascinated me. DD watched the series about him starring David Tennant that was on the other year but I gave that a miss.

I meant to record that, as I wasn't able to watch it live, but I forgot. I hope it is repeated, or available on catch-up.

I've just watched I am Jackie O. Some amazing archive footage. I see it's being repeated at 1:35 am on 17 May for anyone who wants to set their Freeview recorder.

Thanks, OakDryad. I'll get onto that now grin

Thanks. I’ll make a note of that. I’d seen footage of her riding her horses on Facebook so I did know about her love of horses and riding. I hadn’t realised that her marriage to Onassis had become so unhappy towards the end.

It’s sad that she died so long but at least she didn’t know that her son would die so tragically in a plane crash. They really did seem to be cursed, didn’t they.

OakDryad Wed 11-May-22 18:41:11

Yes. Both John F Kennedy junior and Alexander Onassis died in light aircraft accidents.

So young not so long….

Thank you both, MayBee70 and OakDryad! I’m looking forward now to watching this next week.

I never thought of her as a great beauty at the time; wasn’t my idea of beautiful. It’s only now I’m older that I retrospectively realise how elegant and charismatic she was.

OakDryad Wed 11-May-22 19:35:03

She struck me as both beautiful and gentle. She reminded me of the actress Rachel Weitz.

I discovered that in 2010 it was reported Weitz and her then husband director Darren Aronofsky, with writer producer Noah Oppenheim, were planning to make a film in which she played Jackie Kennedy. Sadly, she and Aronofsky divorced. Oppenheim eventually made the film with direcor Pablo Larrain starring Natalie Portman.

I didn’t like that film. Mark Kermode raved about it. Much as I like Natalie Portman I think it would have been better with Rachael Weitz; I hadn’t thought about it before but she does have the same look. Features that are both delicate and heavy at the same time if that makes sense.

I have flicked forward on Sky Arts and see it is repeated again on Tuesday at 1.35 a.m. I have set it to record. Just check the time if you want to watch it as this was yesterday and I have slept since then.

Sky Arts is Channel 165 on Virgin, but Sky Arts HD isn't.
