Switched at birth.

Thank you, I was wondering what to watch this evening.

This is going to be very sad viewing.

What an absolute nightmare. They have 2 cases tonight, one 2 ladies in their 70's and the other 2 little girls I think aged 3. I honestly can't think of anything worse

Thanks for reminder.

Two amazing stories

I have just watched this and feel that perhaps one person should not have the right to intrude on the family relationships of another. I suspect the woman who was totally unaware that she had been brought up by non biological parents will not recover from the shock of finding out the facts quickly or perhaps never.

Thank you lemsip, I watched it. I wonder how many other people are now wondering if they were switched at birth.

I was very impressed by the Italian parents agreeing to swop their little daughters, and so glad it all worked out.

I hope Jackie, who was obviously in shock when she found out she'd been switched, manages to accept the situation with support.

I missed the start of the programme, so I don't know how or why the two adults contacted the programme. I did really feel for Jacky, as she was obviously knocked for six by the news that she wasn't who she thought she was.

I could have been one of those babies, had I not been born via forceps.

In those days, the babies were taken away at night and brought back to the mothers for feeds.

When the nurse brought my mother her baby to feed, she said "this isn't my baby". The nurse poo-poohed her, but she was adamant, as "my baby's prettier than this" (apologies to the other baby, who I am quite sure was just as pretty), and pointed out that the baby brought to her didn't have the forceps marks on the head.

They quickly realised that yes, she had been given the wrong baby, and I was brought to her. I wonder what would have happened, had I not had forceps marks to make me stand out, and the error wasn't rectified at the next feed.

Heart-rending stories but handled so well by the Italian families.

I hope Jackie can accept this and has all the support she needs.
Both families sound loving, kind and supportive.

HurdyGurdy shock
There but for the grace of God ......

I remember that they took DC1 away to enable me to 'get some sleep' but I spent the night fretting and worrying that she might need feeding or I might not get the right baby back. It seemed very cruel at the time.
They did put the plastic name bracelets on them by that time.
Her younger siblings look like her so she was obviously ours!

It made uncomfortable viewing. Someone's life turned up side down for the sake of a TV programme.

That is not the case. The important things always is the truth. When you do family history you are seeking the truth at all times. Nothing else matters. What is the point of living under a false illusion or believing you are someone you are not?

But one of the swapped babies was the person who contacted the TV programme for help in finding out what had happened all those years ago.

People contact the producers or presenters of this programme for help in unlocking the past, the producers do not go out and look for participants.

Jackie could have refused to be filmed.

Maybe when Jackie realises she has siblings and family she missed out on she'll come round
.Of course there are always people who are resistant to change ,but it needn't change her life she can still be who she has always been and doesn't have to contact her birth family if she decides its not what she wants

Anyone who is seeking information through official channels regarding birth details after adoption is required to have counselling, which across the country is a bit like the curate’s egg, good in parts. I’m sure that the programme will offer very good counselling to participants, particularly necessary when one person’s ‘right to know’ impinges on another’s.

I used to provide this counselling and have seen first-hand the highs and lows of revelations regarding families of origin. In this instance I actually thought the participants were handled very carefully. The question, ‘Who am I?’’ is fundamental to some people’s identity and I do believe they have a right to pursue the answer.

I agree.

She will not lose the family she grew up with because they have now found another one.
