I have just started watching this and am totally hooked. It has drama, comedy, sadness, sex and violence a real mixture of gangster's lives. Anyone else watched it.

Of course!

Yes. I think there have been a couple of threads on this. We came to it late but I loved it. I was bereft when we finished it!

Best boxset I have ever watched by far....Think I actually fell in love with Tony Soprano....That's what my children and husband tell me anyway...blush

Kate1949 Tue 19-Jul-22 13:13:20

It was Christopher for me Mine. Yet he was such a horrible character blush

This is my favourite series. There is a fairly new film called, I think, The Many Saints of Newark. It is the story of the Multisantis, Christopher’s family. So it is Tony’s father and Uncles. We see Tony from a child, and his awful mother. Think I want to watch it again. It’s on Amazon Prime

We have just started watching it on the boat. TV reception can be patchy so we get boxed sets for evening. I do agree it is an excellent series so far. Previous ones we have watched are The Wire, and Breaking Bad. It has to be really good to stand up to the breaks in viewing.

Mine I know what you mean about Tony ❤❤❤❤

Several times. grin
We watch it every winter. Enjoy!

travelsafar Glad to see someone else with good taste! ?
I watch the box set every few years, notice new things and enjoy it more each time. Imo, it’s a contender for the best TV ever, and James Gandolfini (Tony) gives, again imo, the greatest performance ever seen on TV, especially when you consider how many hours he is actually on-screen. Many actors turn in wonderful performances in a film, but JG does it in virtually every episode (86 in all).
Not forgetting the rest of the cast, Eddie Falco (Carmela) and Lorraine Bracco (Melfi) in particular are outstanding.
I saw The Many Saints of Newark when it came out, I enjoyed it but it no where compares to The Sopranos. JG’s son Michael plays the young Tony, and although I hate to say it, should he have got the part? I really don’t think so, he had little screen presence.
The outstanding actor in it for me was Vera Farmiga playing Tony’s Mum Livia, and the film does help you understand why she is so horrible in The Sopranos. Plus Ray Liotta is in it, that’s always worth a bonus point from me, even if the film itself isn’t very good.

As soon as the music starts I’m totally hooked.

Kate1949 Tue 19-Jul-22 20:46:29

I bypassed it for years thinking it was just about the Mafia. Well, it was but I hadn't realised that the Sopranos were a family. I thought that would be the name of a Mafia gang. Silly me.

One of the best tv series ever made.

Urmstongran Tue 19-Jul-22 21:00:50

My absolute most favourite box set. Even better than The Wire and Breaking Bad in my opinion. As someone upthread said, the opening music. ... Alabama3 ...

“You woke up this morning, got yourself a gun
Mama always said you'd be the chosen one
She said, "You're one in a million, you've got to burn to shine
But you were born under a bad sign with a blue moon in your eyes"
? ?

Gets me anticipatory every episode I settle down to watch.
“Pine Barrens” was my favourite episode of the whole bunch!
“You got Tic Tacs?”

I howled laughing that whole episode. ??

Oldbat1 of course I’m not a bit of a nerd when it comes to The Sopranos, but do you know that the theme song “Woke Up This Morning” is a remix version by Alabama 3 who are actually an English group?

If any of you enjoy podcasts, Michael Imperioli (Christopher) and Steven Shirippa (Bobby B.) do one, it’s excellent in parts. MI is such a contrast to his character in TS, he’s said more than once irl that if he couldn’t be an actor, he’d like to be a therapist, and going by the podcast, he’d be a good one, his voice alone is lovely, never mind what he actually says. SS is, to say the least, a bit too enthusiastic, and one does hear oneself telling him to be quiet (in my case, a lot less politely than that).

There was going to be a touring show “In Conversation with The Sopranos” in the UK with MI, SS and Vincent Pastore (Big Pussy) but that’s been cancelled due to COVID. Fingers crossed, that eventually happens.

Loved it, I was sorry to hear Tony had died. Has everyone watched The Godfather too?

An interesting article from the other day. A ‘then & where are they now?’
