Trom (Scandi noir BBC4) - anyone else watching?

Thank you for reminding me. I would love to visit tge Faroe Islands.
My father spent time in the war in the Faroes building its first runway and always wanted to go back. He used to regale me with anecdotes about the Faroese language which he seemed able to pick up. Mind you he also had a working knowledge of Gaelic and was confident enough to make a speech in German to the townsfolk of a newly liberated wee place in Germany where he had to “depose” the pro-Nazi former Bürgermeister and appoint a new one. Heaven only knows what he said because Mum used to roll her eyes sometimes when he spoke German. He was a natural communicator though and he and my German grandfather, who spoke no English got on famously.
So watching Trom will remind me of him.

MawtheMerrier, is Faroese like Old Norse, I wonder? I do notice in the subtitles that they use a letter I associate with Anglo Saxon, can’t remember what it’s called though.

On a related topic, I remember reading (or hearing, probably on Melvyn Bragg’s Routes of English) that during WW2 some U.K. airmen found themselves in Iceland for a while. They were from Cumbria (IIRC) and apparently found that their home dialect allowed them to understand Icelandic at least at a basic level. Their home dialect evidently had its roots in the Vikings’ Old Norse - same as the Icelanders, presumably.

Watched it all. Marvellous scenery, but we didn’t realise when it ended. Looked for another episode.?

Just finished watching Trom and really enjoyed it but very frustrated with the ending. Is there going to be another series?

Scenery was fabulous but stark - very much like Iceland but minus the ice. It made me google the Faroes to find out more.

PS. Just googled and apparently series 2 is in the pipeline.

We finished watching it last night and just rather disappointed with the ending but it does seem there will be another series. The different islands are linked by under sea roads, really fascinating. I've attached a pic of the roundabout!

They are rather miserable but what I like about the SN TV series is that they feature normal ordinary looking people with bad hair cuts and lined faces!

We spent a couple of days in the Faroes in 1982. In those days the schedule for the ferry from Iceland involved leaving UK passengers there while it went off to Denmark. We were picked up and returned to Scrabster later. No undersea roads between the islands in those days.

The scenery is spectacular but what impressed me was the way that the islands rise so steeply out of the sea - hardly anywhere to get ashore if you were shipwrecked! I remember driving along some narrow roads with a steep hill on the landward side and an equally steep drop on the seaward. However, contrary to the way 'Trom' portrays them, we found the people very friendly and welcoming.

The language is similar to Icelandic and other Scandinavian languages.

Yes, I remember noticing that when I first watched a Scandi drama - no plastic surgery, straggly unwashed hair, no makeup. Very refreshing..... and I love all their Fair Isle patterned jumpers.

It would seem to be de rigeur for everyone in Scandi Noir series to look miserable all the time.

The exception was Beck, which did have the occasional hint of humour.

And walk about in the dark

It was very good I thought but had a worrying end to the series.

Definitely going to watch this one - sailed through the Faroe Islands on our way to Iceland

Yes, I watched Trapped when it was on before. It would be great to have a 3rd series. I love seeing anything set in Iceland with memories of a fantastic holiday there.

No, I got a bit bored by Scandi Noir.

Really enjoyed this and was looking forward to the next series, but I’ve just read that Denmark is delaying it. Hope it gets going soon.
