Nichelle Nichols, perhaps best known as Lt. Uhura of Star Trek fame, has died at the age of 89.

Apparently she was persuaded to stay on for more than one episode by Martin Luther King and thank goodness he did so.

She was an icon to so many people.

She, and Gene Rodenberry, were ahead of their time.
