Who’s planning on watching this tonight on BBC1 at 9pm?

Starring the gorgeous Sean Bean and Nicola Walker.

Only snag, it’s written by the same bloke who wrote ‘Mum’, which most other GN’ers loved, and I thought was a load of nonsense.

I know I was in the minority.

Hope his latest effort is more to my taste.

But with Sean in it..,..smile?

I must be a glutton for punishment, or a cock-eyed optimist. We recorded it and even after all these comments I’m going to give it a go later….

Calendargirl Mon 15-Aug-22 08:14:30

Oh, silly me! Of course Nicholas would be the dead child. I had assumed (wrongly probably) that it was a daughter. And obviously a birthday anniversary with the card.

It all felt very contrived, not at all natural. Nicola Walker is known for her brooding, rather stilted, gazing into the far distance type roles, this will suit her very well.

I've got mixed feelings about this. The 'jingly-jangly' voices at the beginning and the end must signify inner conflict I suppose but I found them horrendously irritating.

It's on again tonight, not sure how many episodes there are but I'll tune in to see what happens next. I only ever saw a few minutes of 'Mum' and I couldn't take to it.

TerriBull Mon 15-Aug-22 08:23:22

I see it was written by the writer who wrote "Mum" which I thought managed to be clever, poignant and funny. I also thought, in that, he captured suburbia well.

I'm still puzzling over the many aspects of this one, as others have said it didn't ring true in parts. I also read that Nicola is a solicitor in "Marriage". I've been in many solicitors offices, I worked for a firm that had one attached, no way did her office strike me as being a legal establishment, and her boss didn't resonate as presumably the partner in the firm, much too Jack the Lad.

Hope down the line Jessica the daughter off loads that awful controlling boyfriend. That was an awkward evening shock which again seemed contrived.

Didn’t realise it was on I like Sean Bean and Nicola walker but I probably skimmed over the word ‘ marriage’ on my tv menu ?
Anyway I won’t bother now I was watching the programme about the Indian partition very interesting I had never realised Mountbatten s wife had a thing with Nehru but there was a photo, never seen before and there was definitely some secret hand holding going on …….apparently it was well known but never acknowledged

You can come here and watch me load the dishwasher if you want.

Love it ?

TillyTrotter Mon 15-Aug-22 08:28:43

“Mum” had characters who were funny when they didn’t know they were being IYKWIM and that was down to Stefan G’s writing.
There is no humour in “Marriage” so far, despite Nicola Walker’s best efforts. It needs a spark of something - too many boring people.

TerriBull Mon 15-Aug-22 08:29:37

Oh I forgot part two of that interesting programme about the Indian partition was on Bluebell, I did know Mountbatten's wife had a fling with Nehru, he was one of a long line of her flames on the side ......allegedly! Must catch up with that.

I was going to watch it then saw a trailer and decided not to - it would seem that I made the right decision!

Even the trailer was boring, and that’s usually where they show the best bits ?

Disappointing to say the least!! In fact a load of cr*p!

Nanamary19 Mon 15-Aug-22 09:44:48

Very slow first episode but I will binge watch the remaining 3 episodes on I player today,
Fingers crossed I'll be in for a treat

Dottydots Mon 15-Aug-22 11:10:30

I wasted an hour of my life watching that last night. Most disappointing. Being a glutton for punishment, though, I will try again with tonight's episode.

Shirley48 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:25:03

I think the premise of it - showing the layers behind a long marriage - was a good idea, but it didn’t work for me, so far. There seemed - to me - to be no depth to the characters; I had little interest in what was going to happen, if anything.

I agree with this. A good plot can compensate for thin characterisation, and deep characters can make up for a sketchy plot, but this had neither. I haven't checked the schedules for tonight, but of there is nothing interesting on the other channels I might give it another go, but if it doesn't improve I'll give up, I think. It's a shame, as both actors are good.

Visgir1 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:35:16

I was going to leave for a bit, but not sure I will bother now. Normally Sean Bean and Nicola Walker are both very watchable.

Must say, We are liking Van Der Valk, I don't remember seeing the original series, just know the music.

Juliet27 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:36:27

Would anyone dare say they enjoyed it after all those comments? I’ve not watched it …mainly because I forgot, but it doesn’t sound an enjoyable prospect.

silverlining48 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:47:55

Well I quite enjoyed it Juliet. Rather reminded me of my dh and me, just with less hand holding. It’s a slow burn and would have thought similar to many marriages.
I watched the second part of Indian partition on 4+1 afterwards and found that interesting. The fact that it used the original film with added colour made it very watchable.

silverlining48 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:51:07

VIsgirl for some unknown reason I can still hum the signature tune of van de valk. Can’t think why, it was first on years ago but was quite catchy. Tra la la smile

Mine Mon 15-Aug-22 11:58:10

I'm not sure if I enjoyed or not...It was very strange viewing....I kept waiting for Sean Bean to erupt and throw things about or shout and swear.... Mmmmm.... maybe watch eposide 2 before I fully decide weather to bin it or keep watching

NanOf8Girls Mon 15-Aug-22 11:58:34

I'm no expert but it seems to be portrayal of how having a covert (now elderly) controlling parent (Emma's dad) has influenced the type of man Emma chose as a life partner. Emma has been suppressed by both her brother and dad. She pretends all is jolly and ok. Ian her husband covertly wraps Emma in cotton wool, but is too weak to deal with the emotional stuff going on. So he treads on eggshells and Emma does too with her coercive dad and resentful brother. It seems Jess (their daughter) has picked a similarly narcisisstic boyf who seeks to control her. It seems to be a cycle of unsaid tension that won't end well. Just my opinion.

Nanamary19 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:32:56

All episodes are avalible on iplayer no need to wait for 9pm tonight

Kim19 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:40:32

Well...... don't know if I'm desprate or insane but I binge watched the whole series (4). Certainly nothing like my experience or concept of married life in maturer years. Really disappointed that Nicola Walker chose to do this. Quite awful in my humble opinion. Look forward to reading the comments of anyone who enjoyed this.

Sar53 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:57:36

I'm afraid I gave up after 10 minutes, found it very boring.

'The Secrets She Keeps', also on I Player is good and well worth watching.
