Who’s planning on watching this tonight on BBC1 at 9pm?

Starring the gorgeous Sean Bean and Nicola Walker.

Only snag, it’s written by the same bloke who wrote ‘Mum’, which most other GN’ers loved, and I thought was a load of nonsense.

I know I was in the minority.

Hope his latest effort is more to my taste.

But with Sean in it..,..smile?

Totally depressing!

Marjgran Sun 21-Aug-22 11:39:10

See it through. It is brilliant and quietly moving

ClaraB Sun 21-Aug-22 11:36:56

Very disappointing as both main characters are such good actors.

Nickysmadhouse Sun 21-Aug-22 11:29:53

I sadly admit I binge watched it yesterday… it really never got going for me, felt very monotone and the whole time i was willing for a jumps start… without the ‘to the side to the side’ etc etc lark ?

We watched the first episode and found it really boring. Havent watched another one and wont be watching it tonight either.

I wouldn't think of it as "a snag" as I absolutely loved Mum when it was shown.
My snag would be that Sean Bean is in it. Urghhh, no thanks !

henetha Sun 21-Aug-22 11:09:12

I've only seen two episodes. I'm hoping the next two will help. And be a bit enjoyable smile.

MayBee70 Sun 21-Aug-22 11:06:45

It doesn’t imo

henetha Sun 21-Aug-22 11:01:30

I agree. I'm still trying to work out what this programme is trying to tell us. Why is this marriage interesting, or thought provoking? What was the writer's intention? Hopefully it will become clearer.

MayBee70 Sun 21-Aug-22 10:56:43

No. But if not enjoyable they need to be thought provoking. And the thought needs to be more than ‘ what on earth was that all about’.

henetha Sun 21-Aug-22 10:56:08

True. But I think the word 'enjoy' does apply to a fictional drama series.
I'm continuing to watch it, but hoping it might improve.

VANECAM Sun 21-Aug-22 09:28:16

Enjoy?

TV programmes are not exclusively for “enjoyment”

FlexibleFriend Sat 20-Aug-22 21:20:36

I watched it all against my better judgement and can't say I've altered my original opinion. I thought it was complete and utter crap after one episode and still think the same after watching the whole thing. How anyone enjoyed it is beyond me. I couldn't relate to it at all, they were tedious boring people who lived through a tragedy but so what. I was married to my husband for 27 years and compared to those two we were the life and soul.

Well I finally got around to watching, I binged watched three episodes. Not really what I was expecting, I agree the intro music was truly awful, I had to turn the volume down when it came on. I also felt like we were being kept guessing just a little too much. What had happened to their son, why did her dad dislike the husband so much, what happened in the hotel room with her creepy boss, is Seans character really perving over the young lass at the gym? I’m hoping all will be revealed in the next episode. They seem so happy at times yet individually they appear to be quite lonely. I do feel I want to keep watching to the end, it’s a bit Play for today ‘ish’

I’ll be interested to hear what you think when you’ve watched the last episode.

It's life Jim, maybe not as we know it but it's life all the same

GrandmasueUK Fri 19-Aug-22 22:37:10

I watched all 4 episodes and I was really underwhelmed by it all. The forced laughter from Sean Bean and his daughter was awful. I didn’t believe in any of the relationships. I’m sure that if anyone in my family were so distressed and sobbing so much, I’d do more than tentatively pat them on the arm, as they seemed to do. I know it was about lack of communication but I think there should have at least been some with the audience. I felt as though I was watching an improv show at times.

songstress60 Fri 19-Aug-22 21:14:44

Boring, puerile drivel. Don't know how it got broadcast and what a waste of good actors.

Diggingdoris Fri 19-Aug-22 14:07:20

I watched 2 episodes with DH and he said how dull, boring and pointless it was , just like normal life, so why would anyone want to watch it!
I've now watched the rest and I can see that there's an underlying story, but wasn't impressed. I loved 'Mum', and was sad when it finished, so I hoped this was going to be similar. Hugely disappointed!

It’s like being a fly on the wall in couple counselling session.

JPB123 Fri 19-Aug-22 11:25:33

Totally agree,uncomfortable viewing.

Joplin Fri 19-Aug-22 02:23:20

I thought it was a masterpiece of under-acting - I’ve got up to episode 3 now. Even the “music” is appropriate ( and I’m a classical musician who would normally hate this sort of noise ). It’s almost a shock to the senses.

Sara1954 Thu 18-Aug-22 18:09:13

I quite like mundane, I like books where little happens.
I wanted to like it, but each episode depressed me a bit more, and episode four had me cringing with embarrassment.

Chestnut Thu 18-Aug-22 17:33:50

Well Abigail's Party showed a mundane gathering with seemingly meaningless conversations, but everything had a deeper undercurrent so it was by no means boring. So I agree that the mundane can be interesting when well written and acted. But it has to be very cleverly done.

Shirley48 Thu 18-Aug-22 17:18:51

Chestnut

Why anyone would want to watch something that is a reflection of all the most boring aspects of their own life is beyond me. I want something with fascinating characters that will take me to another time or place.

I think you could watch a drama that appeared to show very mundane lives, seemingly meaningless conversations, etc - but if it’s well written and well directed, you should be left with a feeling of enquiry, a sense that you’ve been party to someone’s inner lives - and questions and thoughts that stay with you. I definitely didn’t have that reaction; I wasn’t moved.
