I loved Sunset Song - I read A Scots Quair at school for my O Grade English and got top marks, so it must have left a lasting impression!

Sunset Song is my favourite book of all time. I first read it at school, and we all realised that Chrissie is us. And Chrissie is Scotland too. The other books in the Quair aren't nearly as good.

I saw Vivien Heilbron reading from Sunset Song at a book festival. It was sublime. I missed the repeat so I'll go and find it on iPlayer. Thanks for the information, Grayling!

Thanks for letting us know Grayling. I watched it again last night. I was brought up in the Howe of the Mearns and attended "the academy in Stonehaven" so lots of lovely nostalgia for me hearing place names and dialect!

I read A Scots Quair in 6th year, probably because of SS having been televised the previous year, and promised myself I’d never read LGG again. But time passes, one’s taste changes and I gave Smeddum a go, and that’s how I know LGG is not a favoured writer of mine. I don’t like his writing style and openly admit his use of Doric is too much for me.
I saw a production of SS at my local Rep a good few years back. It wasn’t done by the excellent resident company, and it was completely underwhelming. One of those when you swither if you’ll actually go back in for the second half as the first had seemed interminable.
So I doubt if I’ll watch it on catch-up, but thanks for the heads-up.

My lovely teacher, Mr Driscoll read Sunset Song aloud to us in class. You could have heard a pin drop. He held a very mixed ability group in the palm of his hand. ❤️

I'm sure it's very good but I seem to remember it being very depressing Sunday evening drama. Maybe it was just the association with it being on Sunday evening though. Not sure if I'd like to see it again.

I used to teach it at Higher English. One of my favourite texts. I remember the tv series too. The recent film isn't a patch on the original.
