I have Netflix and Prime?
Any recommendations please?
Thanks.

During the first lockdown I binge watched Downton Abbey on Prime. It was brilliant. I hadn't watched it when on tv. I have been watching some film versions of classic books lately...Jane Austin for example.

Mortimer and Whitehouse, gone fishing. Its not really about fishing, but two lovely older men cracking jokes and having the time of their lives in gorgeous countryside. I love it, it makes me smile all the way through.

I have been catching up on the IPlayer. Thank goodness for the streaming services now.

"Virgin River " (Netflix) is a sort of a soap, really. Gorgeous scenery and plenty of romance, with a few heroes & villains!

But…very cheesy.

Virgin river, or Emily in Paris are good lighthearted series.

A Place to Call Home is on a terrestrial channel in the afternoons, sorry I can't remember which one. I loved it and also Virgin River.
The Outlaws is very funny, a very mixed group of people doing community service. BBC Ghosts I think it was called. Inherited house being restored, wife can see all the ghosts there.

Frozen Planet II on IPlayer, excellent.

Only have Freeview, and there's not a lot currently showing that I would recommend, apart from the Bidding Room , Repair Shop and some repeats of The Dog House. These are all non fiction, but the latter two are a joy to watch - and uplifting, - whilst the Bidding Room is just fun because some of the dealers are very quirky.

I too really enjoyed Brokenwood. Hoping for a new series. Murder mysteries with likeable characters. With some humour and not gory.

‘The Great British Bake Off’ starts tonight! ‘Masterchef’, disrupted by changes to the BBC schedules, should resume again soon. Other than that, I will keep a weather eye open for some decent documentaries across all the channels, including Netflix. Talking about the latter, I see a series about Archduchess Elizabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, is beginning there soon. I am filled with anticipation about this as from what I have read, she was a fascinating and complex woman. Of course I am prepared for a fair bit of the usual ‘artistic licence’ nonsense but that is par for the course these days! It’s almost as if already interesting lives were not quite riveting or scandalous enough for today’s audiences!

BBC 2 are showing normal programmes
I'm watching Homes under the Hammer
Can't understand why main channels are still constantly doing obituary seems excessive to me

We watched Only Connect (is that normal? debatable ?) and that rather weird and very slow series with Aidan Turner. There are other programmes available, but then I don't watch much day-time TV.

Another vote for Call My Agent - best thing I've seen for ages. I tried the English version but didn't get very far.

I hope you all have seen "The Detectorists" . It was BBC but was also on Netflix at some stage. I believe they are doing a one off Christmas special.

The Great (about Catherine the Great) on Channel 4 (but only if you can put up with bad language)

‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ on Amazon Prime about a housewife who discovers she has a talent for stand-up comedy

Aveline Tue 13-Sept-22 11:26:00

I didn't like Schitts Creek much either. I disliked the whole family and only liked Patrick, Stevie and Roland and his wife.
I'm watching 'Community' these days on Netflix. It's about a pretty third rate community college and a group of disparate individuals who attend.

Best comedy on tv is " 2 doors down" it's on one of the bbc hubs

Perhaps I should try again.
They were all so annoying!! ?

NotSpaghetti Tue 13-Sept-22 10:42:21

Nearly Callistemon21 ?
Probably just you and one of my adult daughters!

I was not taken with it initially. I warmed to it by about episode 3.
Now I think it's one of the best things I've seen of the light-hearted type.
I do miss it but know there will be no more.

oh I will look for this as people have mentioned it before

^A Place to Call Home - I recorded it all over here having watched a lot of it in Australia but then our box went wrong.
Is it only on Prime?^

I'm watching it on Prime. I don't know if it's available anywhere else.

JaneJudge Mon 12-Sept-22 17:25:06

if you are looking for stand up, Paul Chowdry and Jon Richardson , to name just two have good stand up shows on Prime smile

I second Schitts Creek, I was very sorry when it ended.

Is it just me who couldn't get into it?
I found it so annoying!

Noni Hazlehurst plays such a different part in this.
