Is this The Larkins from the 1950s/60s? I vaguely remember it, Peggy Mount was in it. My parents thought is was funny, but beautiful? I don’t think so! She always had her pinny on and yelled a lot.

Love the Larkins although I think the original was the better series, in fact I may well see if I can find it and rewatch over the holiday time.

My apologies the original series I’m thinking of was ‘Darling Buds of May’ I’d forgotten they changed the name to the Larkins. I’m going to see if I can find it.

Yes I loved it, I found it recently.

Nanagem Thu 15-Dec-22 08:24:32

I loved darling buds of May, so sweet and easy watching, the larkins just doesn’t work for me, actors are just so wrong for the characters, just my opinion it’s not sweet anymore

Not keen on this series only watched two episodes but was bored, saving grace is Bradley Walsh but he’s got his son on it as village policeman. There’s a lot of stars that come as a pair now I’ve noticed, it’s a turn off for me.

I like it ,it's nice easy watching

Aussiegran this is the earlier version that is so popular in the UK. I think that a lot of people are of the opinion that it couldn’t be bettered. It’s also on BritBox

I loved the books, esp. the first (The Darling Buds of May), IMO a comedy classic, but only watched the first TV episode - Pop and Ma Larkin were too different from my imaginings.
Maybe I should give it another go….

I read somewhere that H E Bates was inspired by seeing just such a large, jolly family decanting itself from a vehicle somewhere.

I enjoyed The Larkins but found it hard to get my head around Charlie being black. I suppose I still have Philip Franks, who played him in DBOM in my mind.

Just found Darling Buds of May all 3 series plus 2 specials on ITV X I shall enjoy that over the holidays as DH and I used to watch it together 🥹

The ‘original original’ was ‘Life With The Larkins’, in the 50’s I think, and starred Peggy Mount as a battle axe with pinny, hairnet and foghorn voice.

Then ‘The Darling Buds Of May’ and now ‘The Larkins’.

I watched the first episode of the latter, and didn’t bother with any more.

I loved the books and feel the TV series doesn't live up to them but its a light' brain holiday' watch which I enjoy and its relaxing.

The Darling Buds of May was streets ahead of the new series - David Jason was perfick for the role! smile

FannyCornforth Thu 15-Dec-22 11:35:44

David Jason really is an exceptional actor.
How his diverse characters, Del; Frost; Pop Larkin are so well loved.

Georgesgran Thu 15-Dec-22 12:22:14

I’m into ‘Frost’ again, late nights. DJ really is a fine actor, though I wasn’t a fan of Fools and Horses.

yogitree Thu 15-Dec-22 12:26:08

I loved the 'Buds'. Very feel-goody, but so unrealistic for how the world is now.

Oopsadaisy1 Thu 15-Dec-22 13:04:56

Ok, I haven’t seen The Darling buds of May or the new Larkins. Only the Life with the Larkins, although I didn’t realise that was the originals name.

Floradora9 Thu 15-Dec-22 16:36:08

I thought it was dire , sorry.

Me too - my "go to" series when I want to switch off - or have Xmas cards to write!!
That and Vera - they share brilliant characterizations.

I used to love Meet the Huggets with Kathleen Harrison, Jack Warner and Kenneth Connor.
The clip on the page has Ethel asking Joe for her housekeeping money! shock
