We'll have to agree to disagree Fleur.

Totally.

I had to smile, lemsip, ( just spotted this/your post ).
On Saturday evening I watched the TV programme on Cliff Richard, really enjoyed it.
I mentioned it on a friendly thread, that I was a lifelong fan of Cliff. I thought no one had noticed it as no one remarked on it, other than one kind lady who said she had always been an Elvis fan. ( I now think the others didn't like to say anything!!) grin
Oh dear!

Why should he, or any older performer, retire? It makes my blood boil to see 'campaigns' such as Stop Elton John, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart etc from performing. They obviously enjoy what they're doing. People are paying to see them. What's the problem? Rod Stewart is nearly 78 and is on a mostly sold out tour at the moment. Paul McCartney went down a storm at Glastonbury. Our nephews went to see the almost 80 year old Stones at Hyde Park and said they were sensational.

That depends if they are still good at it, or not? McCartney was a true embarrassment at the Olympics, for instance.

I admire those in sport or music who know how to go when at the top- rather than expose their slow demise.

As for Cliff, I don't think he ever had it, I'm afraid. He gives me the creeps.

It’s like saying there should be an upper age limit for having an opinion on GN. 🤣🤣🤣

henetha Tue 20-Dec-22 10:10:26

I just can't see it really. He has always seemed like a decent Christian chap to me. But I could be wrong. I'm a terrible judge of character.
Anyway, I thought his concert the other night was quite good. His voice is holding up quite well for his age. I quite like it that performers can continue to sing or act into old age these days.

I think a lot of people might suspect there’s no smoke without fire in his recent legal case.
I’m with MrsKen and Lucca but even more - I actually find him quite creepy.

Indeed, this. And for very good reasons.

Lovely show thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was Cliff being so scathing about Marty Wilde that really showed his nasty side.
I have never forgotten it.

As I said, I understood your comment. I never heard him being rude about anybody so what you heard him say makes no more difference to me than what I heard Ms Mantel say makes a difference to her many fans.

I have always thought he was ok...ish - but now think he should step back from performing as he looks slightly rediculous hmm

I’m with those who see something of the night in CR.

I highlighted a tv show and so many piled in with negatives. start another thread .

Don’t let them spoil your enjoyment lemsip. No one has to like the same performers or people and there have always been suggestions of ‘something off about them’ used as an excuse when people don’t like someone. Think of the H&M saga.
I also understand annsixty’s comment, though I don’t know the incident she mentions.
I heard Hilary Mantel on the radio, being rude and dismissive about JKR. I found Ms Mantel’s books boring and her comments put me off even more.
We’ll watch Cliff when we get back and we’re going to see him next year. Enjoy!

shysal Tue 20-Dec-22 07:34:16

I watched one programme, just to see Bruce Welch whom I adored in my teenage years, although I did find myself watching the whole thing. He, Cliff and Brian Bennett have retained their abilities! I am sure Cliff was lip synching but obviously to his own recorded voice, as many singers do.

BlueBelle Tue 20-Dec-22 07:33:46

Guess you have to accept the negatives as well as the positives lemsip we can’t all smile and be passive and there’s not much point in starting a thread where everyone just says ‘ok thanks’ ‘ok thanks’ ‘ok thanks’
conversation meanders and different thoughts about the show or the person will pop up

annsixty Tue 20-Dec-22 07:29:29

So sorry lemsip I hope you enjoyed the show.
Just that it wouldn’t have been for me.

I once heard him on an interview being so terribly unkind and patronising about a fellow entertainer that I formed an instant dislike which has never gone away.
I find there is something “of the night” about him.

BlueBelle Tue 20-Dec-22 07:18:33

I can’t say how sorry to be a bit cryptic but he probably isn’t the innocent he makes out to bev

BlueBelle Tue 20-Dec-22 07:16:58

Pass too, don’t like him too much at all

Calendargirl Tue 20-Dec-22 06:54:27

Saw Cliff live on two occasions in the 80’s.

‘Miss You Nights’ is one of my favourite songs, his voice was lovely then.

Hate to say it, but think it might be time to accept he’s no longer the Peter Pan of Pop, and gracefully retire.

Yes, still very trim and agile for his age, but the years are showing.

It must be hard for ageing pop stars, actors, celebrities to look in the mirror…..

Kalu Mon 19-Dec-22 23:37:19

Pass for me too. I find him sickly sweet and frankly, a too good to be true character. Just instinct, no proof but I have also always felt he is hiding something.

Zoejory Mon 19-Dec-22 23:35:53

I was never a huge fan but did like some of his songs. Carrie Doesn't Live Here Any More being my favourite.

Kate1949 Mon 19-Dec-22 23:31:52

Hair is difficult as you get older. Give him a break. I have alopecia..My hairdresser has a permanent day off.
