Just watched the trailer for new documentary series which Harry and Megan say was inspired by their admiration for Nelson Mandela, Greta Thunberg and Jacinda Ardern amongst others.
They say they are " living to lead others" and want to teach us all to do the same and create a better world.
Is this the beginning of their foray into a political career ?

I’ve just read a very interesting article about this in The Times. Jacinda Arden has made a statement. Apparently the participants all contributed to this documentary a good few years ago. It is only this year that Netflix announced the participation of H&M and not all of the participants are happy about it. The article is worth reading.

Nanatoone Tue 20-Dec-22 16:56:43

These people from me refers to H&M, not the real activists on the list. I despise them and so have no time in my life to read any of their nonsense in detail Volver. Don’t be so judgemental of those of us who actually do read about real issues but prefer not to give these nauseating people air time. Just to reiterate that refers to the “charming” M&H (to use their own monikers) and not to actual people with the interests of people genuinely at heart. My opinion, don’t call me stupid or racist (I’m pro Europe and not Tory). I just don’t like schemers like them.

I'm confused

Are Harry and Meghan presenting a series about great leaders including Nelson Mandela, Greta Thunberg, and Jacinda Ardern?

I didn't think it was about Harry and Meghan themselves, but more of a documentary series but I can't access links to some reports.

Oh, right.

It is confusing.

I don’t see these people as leaders at all. Destructive and boring. It’s yet another thing I will not watch. I have no empathy with any man who bleats that he was “terrified” when his brother shouted at him. An ex Army officer? Beyond my Ken. Let’s talk about real issues, rather than these pampered pooches. Sorry, Volver et Al, nothing to do with racism, just unpleasant people in my view.

Nanatoone was not, as you perfectly well know, referring to Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

What Forsythia has posted is interesting and worth following up.

I wonder what Nelson Mandela would think?

volver Tue 20-Dec-22 17:25:31

Well we'll never know. We'll just have to rely on this:

The Nelson Mandela Foundation is proud to announce the launch of a new Netflix series on effective leadership, in collaboration with Blackwell & Ruth and Archewell Productions. Live to Lead is a seven-episode series of compelling interviews with some of the world's most respected and effective leaders from different walks of life, inspired by the legacy of Nelson Mandela.

Let me be very clear. I have not called anybody stupid or racist.

Joseanne Tue 20-Dec-22 17:34:40

I'm confused, (and don't have time to check), but if the interview with Jacinda was conducted prior to H & M's walkout, then of course she might be thinking differently about associating herself with them now?

Zoejory Tue 20-Dec-22 17:35:09

Nelson Mandela obviously knew he was taking part in the Netflix show.

I assume, ( even though I shouldn't), that Netflix has decided to have H&M publicising it. Which has worked.

It's like a parallel universe.

Watch the blooming trailer - all is revealed.

In early March 2019 the prime minister was approached by the Mandela Foundation to participate in a project to develop accessible resources on key attributes of leadership targeted at aspiring young leaders around the world, based off a one-hour interview.

Originally we were advised the outputs would be printed and digital books, short films and audiobooks. The interview was conducted on November 8, 2019. In March 2020 a short book entitled Jacinda Ardern (I Know This to be True) was published based on the interview.

Other participants who also had their contributions published based on their interviews included the late US Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the feminist activist Gloria Steinem, the climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and the American basketball player Stephen Curry.

In March 2021 the Nelson Mandela Foundation advised the prime minister's office they had secured an agreement with Netflix to broadcast the series of interviews, including the 2019 interview with the prime minister.

'In May this year the prime minister's office was notified that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would introduce the series; noting this was nearly two and a half years after the interview had been recorded and permission for its use by the Mandela Foundation had already been provided.

All communication throughout has been with the foundation (there has been no communications with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex regarding the project).

I’ve copied and pasted the statement above for those without access to The Times. If this not allowed, please delete it.

Thanks Forsythia that's very informativesmile.

Forsythia Tue 20-Dec-22 19:16:11

Yes it is Smileless. It says everything that needed to be said I think.

MerylStreep Tue 20-Dec-22 19:27:54

So, to sum up, they hitched their wagon to the Mandela Foundation.

Smileless2012 Tue 20-Dec-22 19:34:57

Maybe encouraged by people dancing in the streets of South Africa the day H & M were married Meryl.

Oh yes, absolutely.

Ardern and everybody else gave interviews to the Mandela Foundation. To which they all presumably sold or gave the rights. Now the Mandela Foundation are using that footage.

That's it. 🤷🏼

So they are going to "present" a ready made series of interviews, a bit like a TV presenter. Was Fiona Bruce not available then?
What price tacking on a sleb endorsement?
Don't pretend it is anything more than that.

MerylStreep Tue 20-Dec-22 19:43:08

Ah yes, SmileLess the dancing that nobody can remember 😄

volver Tue 20-Dec-22 19:44:16

I....I...don't think I did?

But lots of other people did...? I think...?

MerylStreep Tue 20-Dec-22 19:46:21

Nelson Mandelas grandsons recollections. They appear to be different 🤔

volver Tue 20-Dec-22 19:47:10

Oops. Change of topic.

You've got to stay on your toes here, don't you?

Smileless2012 Tue 20-Dec-22 19:50:12

Another example of how recollections may vary Meryl.

Katie59 Tue 20-Dec-22 20:27:43

Of course Harry was in a privileged position easily able to become a leader in whatever field he chose, but he didn’t.
Instead the fled the country with an American divorcee complaining how badly they have been treated. Instead of doing something useful they sell their sob story, betraying his family.

The west has had few notable political leaders in recent years, Obama and Merkel I suppose, are there any others that have had a global influence?.
