As said, got the lergy (lurgy?) and watching any old on telly.

Carry on Camping - honestly!?! But just can't stop, it is soooooo bad.

I do find the world of my childhood shown in any film from 60/70s a comfort.
Only yesterday we wondered how ‘Carry on’ had been banned by the woke police.

We have watched some Dad's Army recently. What a timeless, wonderful comedy that is.

As for the Carry On films. There are so many likeable actors in them, I can forgive them lots of things.

I can't recall the exact words in one of the Carry Ons but one scene which tickles me is when Jim Dale's junior doctor is lusting over a female. He's asked whether there are symptoms like a fast pulse, high temperature and the like. He looks flustered and pulls at his tie. "I meant the patient!" roars the wonderful Hattie Jacques. Old time sexist comedy at its best.

Cleo, Screaming and Up the Khyber are my favourites. It’s weird watching them with all the rules we have now, but there’s no F words or worse, no gruesome images and lots of laughs.

Social conditioning by virtue seekers

Agreed, it's astonishing when people condemn these old movies for being politically incorrect, then sit down and watch all the gratuitous violence, swearing and pornography we now have in movies and TV. All perfectly acceptable it seems.

When people say they are offended by old movies and TV I wonder why no-one cares that I am offended by what's on today!

Deedaa

Carry on Cleo and Carry On Screaming were my favourites.

Mine too, especially Screaming.
Fenella Fielding as Valeria Watt😍

I had the box set until recently when I got rid of all my DVDs.

Just such an interesting bunch of performers, and a period in entertainment that I’m nostalgic for.

As well as Jim Dale (the voice of Harry Potter in the US), the other Carry On stunner (further to FF) Amanda Barrie is still alive and well.
She’s 89 and married to the author Hilary Bonner.

Yesterday I watched Whisky Galore which was an old, easy watching story without the sexism of the Carry On films.
I also watched South Pacific. I love the music but it is rather racist.

Can’t believe anybody is watching these who doesn’t enjoy the Carry on series.
It’s not as if there is nothing else on. So far since coming home on Tuesday -and because all my friends and neighbours seem to be still away- I have watched Knives Out, Glass Onion, a couple of episodes of Emily in Paris and the “special” editions of Only Connect and Christmas (graduate) University Challenge. Not to mention the excellent Royal Institution Christmas lectures.

I enjoy the Carry on films, they seem rather innocent by 2022 film standards.

(I also really love the old Doris Day films, so corny but…)

Katie59 Thu 29-Dec-22 10:23:48

It’s comedy and just like the Black and White Minstrels and many others it’s an anachronism. Replaced by ultra violent and abusive language we see on mainstream films and pornography online today, in my opinion the material more damaging than in the past, but society in general finds it acceptable.

I have the lurgy too and been enjoying the Carry On Films. Carry on Camping and Carry on Matron yesterday made me laugh.

"Infamy, Infamy, They've all got in for me".

Kenneth Williams "Carry on Cleo".

I used to love them all and especially the two early b/w ones Constable (so innocent) and Teacher (heart warming). A very young Richard O'Sullivan was one of the children and Leslie Phillips was leering all over Joan Sims but luckily she felt the same.

Later favourites were Screaming, Cleo, Cowboy, Camping and Khyber. All very raunchy, racist and everything else, but you could be as politically incorrect as you liked back then.

I loved the Joan Sims characters, usually the nagging wife and she was so wonderful in the role!

Favourite line: Fenella Fielding lying on the couch saying 'Do you mind if I smoke?' in Carry on Screaming. The expression on her face was just priceless.

Carry on Cleo and Carry On Screaming were my favourites.

Yes Fleurpepper I know what you mean just..🤮 …similarly On TheBuses, but the past really was a different country and I wouldn’t even attempt to explain or watch any with my Grandchildren or even my children or in fact anyone aged under 50 🫣

Ailidh Wed 28-Dec-22 20:37:44

Oo yes, Constable is a favourite too. I love when the policemen are all marched out to their beats. So many of them!!

DerbyshireLass Wed 28-Dec-22 20:16:04

Love the Carry Ons.

Met Bernard Bresslaw in the 60s. He was gorgeous. Really nice and friendly too.

I think Jim Dale is the last one still alive.

Fleurpepper Wed 28-Dec-22 20:13:05

What quite shocked me tonight, if that the 2 guys are old men- lusting after young girls. Never noticed it before.

Granmarderby10 Wed 28-Dec-22 20:11:16

Re. * Sid James* that laugh …love them or loath them he and the other cast members had unique voices that you could recognise instantly, blindfolded. Ok they were typecast but so many actors sound the same now and there is so very little daft comedy to be had anymore

Margs Wed 28-Dec-22 20:04:29

My fave is "Carry On Henry". Certainly totally devoid of historical accuracy and Terry Scott as Cardinal Wolsey is a complete hoot!

MawtheMerrier Wed 28-Dec-22 19:56:15

“Lergy” sounds like an abbreviation of “allergy” and would presumably be pronounced in a similar way, whereas the “g” in lurgy is hard

tanith Wed 28-Dec-22 19:45:55

I just love Carry on Constable

Fleurpepper Wed 28-Dec-22 19:37:45

Thanks, thought so. Sent an e-mail to a friend whose spelling is usually spot on, and she wrote 'lergy, so wondered.

Right second time - it is indeed lurgy.
