Anyone watching? Very grim, but compelling as always. Last ever series too.

Callistemon21 Mon 09-Jan-23 19:30:19

Eh up! The cafe scene was filmed in Bolton
Lancashire had to get in on the act!!
😂😂😂

Eeh bah gum, weren't the woollen mills in Yorkshire?

By 'eck, we'll be in Staffordshire next, me duck!

Callistemon21 Mon 09-Jan-23 19:31:55

I loved the scene where Catherine rescued Ryan from the bullying teacher

Oh yes, that was wonderful. But Ryan knew where he stood with his Grandma too when she took his lighter (or was it a vape?) from him.

Iam64 Mon 09-Jan-23 19:36:14

Yes, woollen in Yorkshire, we were cotton. Ever the poor neighbour

I think it was a lighter Callistemon. Her sense of right n wrong is what our country needs. Sgt Catherine for PM

Callistemon21 Mon 09-Jan-23 19:39:38

I thoughts vapes were the 'in^ thing! sad

But yes, even if all police were like Sgt Catherine.

Callistemon21 Mon 09-Jan-23 19:40:48

Yes, woollen in Yorkshire, we were cotton. Ever the poor neighbour

LadyHonoriaDedlock Mon 09-Jan-23 20:32:51

I can’t understand people who say Sarah Lancashire mumbles I think she has a loud clear voice but she does have a strong northern accent so maybe it’s the accent although I m a southerner and can understand her perfectly
I think she’s great I loved her answer when the grandson ask how she knew it wasn’t him drawing on the car…. hilarious

I watched series 1 rather compulsively , as the acting was great ,but certain scenes still stick in my memory. James Norton is such a fantastic versatile actor, that I wanted to watch series two and 3 .I found the first episode of each so dark and was reminded of the effect the first series had on me that I didn’t continue. I must be a dreadful wimp. Did anyone else find the series disturbing?

I did find it very disturbing from the start, but it was so compelling I had to keep going. I stopped watching The Fall because it started with a gruesome rape scene which was far too close up and personal for my liking. I feel scenes like that are just sickening.

Love this series..always have the subtitles on so don't miss a line ...Tommy's hair disgusting..and think he is learning Spanish so he can abduct his son and make a quick get-away to either Mexico/Spain or South America...who knows but think he has a plan

This!!!!! That’s totally the plan, I couldn’t understand why he would be learning Spanish (or why he’s adopted a hairstyle like Otto the bus driver in The Simpsons). I think you’re right

Ooh I’m up to date now with HV! Just watched Sunday’s episode. I love all the characters and I’m totally engrossed in the storyline. I love Catherine’s deadpan responses! And when she sat down in that cafe in front of her sister. Just wow! Such a measured attack. It was a masterclass in self restraint.
😱

I rewatched series 2 in preparation for 3.
This weekend, I re-watched series 1 - just because I could.
It reminded me just how terrifying Tommy is when he isn’t constrained in prison.

Why do we think Neil and Claire are taking Ryan to visit Tommy? Is it because they feel it’s less out of control if they’re involved?
Is it because they’re being threatened and intimidated by Tommy via the Eastern European gangsters?

Urmstongran Wed 11-Jan-23 09:30:12

Mind you Iam in series 2 Claire was often saying to Catherine “well he is his dad”. I think she has some misguided sympathy for Ryan’s situation. She thinks he ‘needs’ a dad in his life. Even a bad ‘un. You never know, maybe the scales will fall away from Ryan’s eyes yet.

Going off at a bit of a tangent - do we have a problem with James Norton's good looks in that he's too handsome to hate do you think, kittylester?

I'm not really into James Bond but I think he should be the next one.

kittylester Wed 11-Jan-23 11:03:01

lbc1955, my thinking was that he is far too evil to be gorgeous in HV. But I still love him. blush

I agree with your think re James Bond but think of all the varied roles he could be doing otherwise.

Sunday night - sickly but sweet Call the Midwife then what a contrast Happy Valley, raunchy and riveting.

Yes, I remember this and did wonder if she’d been persuaded by Ryan to talk about his dad, then help them write, later visit.
Legally, Claire is correct. The family courts start from the premise that children have a right to know about and have some form of contact with their birth parents.
But - in a case like this, if Tommy made an application for contact, it would go to a senior Judge and a Children’s Guardian would be appointed. Given the fact Tommy tried to kill Ryan’s grannie, his legal carer, direct contact via prison visits wouldn’t be the starting point.

I like my intimidation theory - but then I like Claire and Catherine and don’t like the idea of a huge fall out.

Chestnut Thu 12-Jan-23 09:46:51

Iam64 Given the fact Tommy tried to kill Ryan’s grannie, his legal carer, direct contact via prison visits wouldn’t be the starting point.
He also brutally raped Catherine's daughter, leading to her suicide. But was that proven? I can't remember the details. He is supposed to have a life sentence so I'm not sure how or why he is planning to go abroad.

Sarah75 Thu 12-Jan-23 10:08:09

Didn’t he also pour petrol on the boy and threaten to burn him?

Iam64 Thu 12-Jan-23 10:11:35

The rape was never prosecuted. His mum only told her mum when she knew about the pregnancy.
A life sentence often means 8 years which would fit with the timescale of this series
Claire did say to Cathryn in the garden after Ryan’s 16 birthday what a good time they’d all had and for the first time he wasn’t going on about his dad
That made me wonder …..

Sarah75 Thu 12-Jan-23 10:13:16

A life sentence often means 8 years. Is that right?!

Iam64 Thu 12-Jan-23 11:04:35

It can Sarah but thr judge can recommend a minimum sentence. If a prisoner gets parole it’s on life licence under strict guidelines. If h they breach the guidelines they’re back to prison so a life sentence is for life.
Was Tommy sentenced for the kidnap snd rape of The young woman is series 2? He’s about to be rear rested for murder
Is he plotting escape

lovebeigecardigans1955 Thu 12-Jan-23 12:22:20

Howdo, ladies. Have you noticed an upswing in tourists MissChateline since this excellent series aired?

Will our Catherine's ex-husband suffer a sticky end if he investigates the drugs angle too closely?

MissChateline Thu 12-Jan-23 15:46:02

Last tango in Halifax and Gentleman Jack were also filmed around the valley and I would regularly see actors in the local shops during filming. Shibden hall, the home of Anne Lister (gentleman Jack) had a huge increase in visitors after the series was shown. My small town has been a bit of a tourist place for a while. There are more coffee shops than could be sustained by a local population. We also get a lot of hikers enjoying the amazing countryside here.
