I am throughly enjoying this drama, it is making me chuckle in parts of the story. It reminds me of a farce. He is bonkers!!! Even the music in places reminds me of The Pink Panther theme.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and was incredulous at the stupidity of the man .

Brilliant acting .

So do politicians get themselves in those positions precisely so they can behave like that, or does that sort of comportment just evolve in them due to their lifestyle?

I don't think it is uniquely politicians, any position of power and authority can have the same result. Interesting question though, what is the motivation?

We're watching. I agree he is bonkers.

No difference ever is there ?

Joseanne Wed 04-Jan-23 23:34:19

I agree Wyllow3, I think the dramatisation showed how far we haven't come on since that time in terms of scandals.

Wyllow3 Wed 04-Jan-23 23:29:18

Well, that MP looking at porn on phone...ones who have affairs with secretaries/PA's..still goes on, the "always blame someone else..."

BlueBelle Wed 04-Jan-23 23:19:36

I don’t think expectations with some people are any different at all
How many times has coleen rooney forgiven Wayne his indiscretions?

Yes, they have portrayed him as having a personality disorder, blaming everyone but himself. I'm not sure how true the portrayal is.

Barbara is shown very sympathetically, definitely as the cleverer partner.
I believe she remarried and died earlier this year but her life after she and John divorced was kept very private.

Yes, they have given him I think a Narcisstic PD in the film....not unusual in many politicians...still today I think

JaneJudge Wed 04-Jan-23 23:07:22

Oh I understand and expectations were very different from today (hopefully though I’m not entirely sure)

Callistemon21 Wed 04-Jan-23 23:04:42

I think, for the sake of the children, his career and the status quo, she must have suppressed her suspicions.

It was only loosely based on fact.

JaneJudge Wed 04-Jan-23 23:01:22

If it’s not clear, I don’t know how his wife bloody put up with him. What a wretched man! 🐿

JaneJudge Wed 04-Jan-23 22:59:50

I am glad he faced justice and went to prison. I can't stand cheats.

It was fraud and theft wot done for him.

Callistemon21 Wed 04-Jan-23 22:57:15

JaneJudge Wed 04-Jan-23 22:51:50

Sorry my auto correct is bonkers grin

JaneJudge Wed 04-Jan-23 22:50:56

No they’d he’d just bloody disappeared forever. How on earth did she put up with him? confused

I was worried he’d stitched up throughout but I see she she married and had a quiet life after they divorced, can’t bloody blame her really!

Callistemon21 Wed 04-Jan-23 22:48:32

JaneJudge 😁

Do you mean made sure his death was real?

JaneJudge Wed 04-Jan-23 22:45:49

I’d have bloody killed him if I was Barbara shockor at least made sure he’d faked his death properly

Callistemon21 Wed 04-Jan-23 22:42:17

Stone house's great-nephew said little of the dramatised version was strictly factual and it was, in fact, more fascinating in real life.

I've enjoyed it. I love Matthew Macfadyen anyway and he made himself so wonderfully pompous. You have to wonder what the secretary ever saw in him. And that dreadful hair! I realise that Philip Green is still wearing the same style so I suppose that says it all.

It’s so well acted. I remember following the case with interest. So much was going on in those days, Lord Lucan, John Stonehouse and Jeremy Thorpe.

BigBertha1 Wed 04-Jan-23 22:31:10

We really enjoyed it too. I read his Wikipaedia entry he was certainly a very eccentric person. He wrote several books too. I wonder what they were like.
