Why does the BBC appoint presenters who cannot pronounce English correctly? I was wincing today during Women's’ Hour as the presenter persistently used ‘v’ instead of ‘th’. there were ‘wivs’ and ‘ whevers’ aplenty. I know RP is frowned upon by the Beeb these days and I am not complaining about accents as I love the variety they bring but find slovenly speech unacceptable . If you want a career in broadcasting surely your first priority is to learn to speak coherently?
I hear Ed Stourton has been given the push for being to ‘posh’
.

Been mentioned before on GN, but I find Alex Jones on The One Show has the most awful screechy voice.

Cannot imagine how she has got where she is with her dreadful squawk.

When my son was little I taught him to pronounce th instead of v.
I'm constantly shouting at voice over presenters to speak properly.
I am all for regional accents too, but slovenly pronunciation is annoying.

It's the between-programme announcer on BBC tv that infuriates me. He has a sort of smug chuckling-at-his-own-private-joke way of speaking which is extremely grating. I don't know why he's needed at all.

I did write to the BBC to complain about her Majesty's funeral being announced as the funeral of Queen Elizabeff , which just about put the tin hat on it for me.

I think some people are unable to pronounce a th, a bit like people who cannot pronounce rs. However I find it really annoying too.

There was a topic on Woman’s Hour recently and 3 women were discussing some subject and ALL 3 of them dropped the G on words ending in ING. Walkin, fishin, doin. ☹️

I’ve already written to the BBC and complained when the weather presenter said ‘off of’.

The BBC have lowered their standards.

I completely agree. This has come up on GN before and someone will probably pop up shortly to say it doesn’t matter as long as the viewer/listener understands what is being said.
I take the view that anyone who works in broadcasting should speak clearly - that’s the whole point of it. Anything that distracts from clarity, as in the examples above, makes them unsuitable for the job. It’s like someone who can’t sing very well becoming a professional singer or someone with no knowledge of medicine becoming a doctor (slight exaggeration there but you know what I mean).
Whenever I get into an argument about this (and incorrect grammar) I always say that if you had the task of teaching English to a non-English speaker, you wouldn’t say ‘pronounce everything the way you fancy and don’t worry about tenses or verb/noun agreement, would you?’
