Doctors - bumped due toearthquake

I am totally bewildered as to why yesterdays (Wednesdays) episode of Doctors was taken off by BBC due to earthquake in Syria and Turkey. (this is what they say).
It was replaced with an old episode of about Longleat.
No other programme or soap seems to have been removed due to this dreadful real life tragedy.

I am really struggling to comprehend the reasoning behind this.

Maybe it was about people trapped under a fallen building for example? It has to be content related.

Was it about accidents or a natural disaster perhaps? In which case it might have been too raw for those with friends or relatives in Turkey.

NorthFace Thu 09-Feb-23 09:21:33

The programme synopisis in the Radio Times says: There are multiple casualties when an explosion rips through a medical conference.

But we can all watch the awfully upsetting and horrific footage on the news.

As an adult I feel I don't need the BBC to censor what I may choose to watch.

That's probably it - making light programming in soaps out of real life disasters never sits well.

I thought this was going to be an appeal for Medicins sans Frontière.
🤔

Here's a link for anyone else who might have thought this was about real doctors helping in a real disaster zone:

I don't think it was censorship on the part of the BBC - merely a producer showing a bit of sensitivity in light of the news.

Just as Titanic would be pulled if a cruise ship had sunk.

I think yesterday's episode was going to be about an explosion at a conference. Maybe a bit tasteless in the light of events in Syria and Turkey.

sodapop Thu 09-Feb-23 12:33:22

Sorry Northface missed your post saying the same thing.

eazybee Thu 09-Feb-23 13:01:43

The episode concerned an explosion at a conference, and I believe there were casualties. That said, I wish there had been a written announcement; I searched for the recording last night and there was nothing, plus the recording facility for 'Doctors'
had stopped.
During the Falklands war there was a drama about Nelson, and they stopped the episode about the battle of Trafalgar, which was shown much much later, understandably I think. later

There have been some awful comments on the Doctors fan page on Facebook. People practically foaming at the mouth because they've missed a half hour soap. Apparently that is far more traumatic than the deaths of thousands of people. The idea that you might postpone something like this because it was inappropriate and disrespectful in the circumstances seems very hard for some people to grasp.

Callistemon21 Thu 09-Feb-23 21:03:46

I find that quite frightening that some are so desensitised to the realities of what other people are facing that missing an episode of a soap incenses them so much, Deedaa.

😥

kittylester Thu 09-Feb-23 22:24:05

But, they might have missed the fact that there had been an earthquake - I am completely serious - one of the nicest people i know 'doesn't do news' and I am often shocked at the things she misses.

Callistemon21 Thu 09-Feb-23 22:29:57

Some people do go through life with heads in the sand (a physical impossibility I know!) but completely unaware of anything outside their own bubble.

I well remember dh’s old aunt phoning to complain very indignantly that Countdown wasn’t on.

It was the day of 9/11! I said, ‘But Eve, haven’t you seen the terrible thing that’s happened in New York?’

‘I don’t care about that! I want Countdown!’

Such a sad episode today. Rob acted brilliantly, Rarely cry at Soaps, but this had me in tears, and I reckon a lotmore to come next week.

Beechnut Thu 30-Mar-23 17:50:30

Me too Franbern 🥲

NanaDana Thu 30-Mar-23 17:57:07

This often happens when the fictional element of a programme can be rather too close to current real life/real time disastrous events. It shows a degree of sensitivity, and I applaud that. As for those who are allegedly "foaming at the mouth" because they're missing a half-hour soap episode... well, I hesitate to comment at all...

rubysong Thu 30-Mar-23 18:19:19

Yes, very well acted by everyone. I can't imagine Doctors without her. I was just amazed that no-one made a pot of tea! That would have been my first reaction. At least they had Scarlet's pizza for when they started to think about food.

eazybee Thu 30-Mar-23 19:29:07

So sad.
A friend's son-in-law died on the way to hospital and his wife was worried about him being cold; the nurses fetched two blankets and tucked them carefully round him while she held him.

LadyGracie Thu 30-Mar-23 20:00:28

So very sad, brilliant acting by all.

I don't like that Karen has left Doctors, there have been to many changes over the last few months.

But I will continue watching, as usual, as I have done forever!

sodapop Thu 30-Mar-23 21:30:02

Such a sad episode especially following the death of Paul O'Grady.. Rob's reaction was very moving, well done to all involved.
