suddenly. no real reason given.
anyone live in twickenham or work in greggs there with an ear on the ground as to why ?

hollysteers Tue 28-Feb-23 00:56:42

Well I’m going to really miss him Fanny, I’m shocked. For all his faults, many and varied, repeating himself, too many “Thank you very much!”, getting things wrong and irrational hatreds, including disparaging any region outside London, certainly was light entertainment. He is a one off and I never took him seriously.
I had him on the night as I have trouble sleeping and could just drift off with his inanities droning on in the background.

So many presenters only seem to cover political matters, which I don’t want for relaxing and sleeping purposes. Mick’s shopping routine etc was just the job.
I found Darren Adam incredibly boring and I’m afraid Cristo was just not up to the job. Ferrari blows his own trumpet and interrupts too much. Nick Abbot is wonderful but not when he goes on about politics. Clive is related to Darren, nice but rather boring. Who am I going to listen to?
I too worry about Steve, the shows being his whole life.
It’s like poor Benny Hill all over again, sacked and then what?

Hello Mr Patel
Thank you for posting.
Good heavens! So Twickenham high street has been inundated with disappointed and angry fans of Steve.
How annoying and rather scary for you, Paul Cooper, Sandys etc.
This is Global’s fault (Steve’s ex-employer) for treating Steve and his fans so shabbily. They owed their listeners some sort of explain and a chance to say goodbye to Steve.
Please be assured that no one on this site would resort to such irresponsible behaviour.
I hope that things calm down and the you get some peace and normality back soon
Best wishes to you

Hello Holly
Did you see the post from Mr Patel? shock

FannyCornforth Tue 28-Feb-23 01:06:28

Oh gawd. Richard Spurr is on now 🥱
Holly the only thing that I can suggest is Audible.
There’s nothing worth listening to overnight are the moment.
The World Service is too hit and miss to have on all night

BlueBelle Tue 28-Feb-23 06:22:29

I did listen to him Fanny in and out of sleep I think the main reason I listened was to get away from a nighttime of politics and disasters he was lightweight and also I was in disbelief at a lot of things he said I could not believe no one picked him up

Peartree I can never think of him as a poor old man he was cruel to many people, he s a braggart, he puts people down he sneers , hes a sad old man who only got his importance out of making cruel fun out of anyone he took a dislike to

Mr Patel the many people who followed and enjoyed his ‘sense of humour’ and are plaguing you now are the same people who enjoy racist or sexist jokes and then accuse those that don’t of being ‘woke’

Holly “poor Benny Hill” another awful man same kind of humour, perverted, sexist and unkind

I m off now going to think of happier things

SA is sorely missed by me, as well as countless others. I tried the world service, it won`t do, I heard the odd snatch of news which made my mind think in the early hours, not what I wanted.

I needed to get through the 3.30 wake-up, which was every day and I drifted back to sleep via SA babble, he has a soporific voice

I turned to yoga nidra by ally boothroyd in youtube, lovely and mind-emptying. I did that before bed and guess what I slept through to 5.30. Weaning myself off from 4am listening is hard, it is certainly not hard to leave lbc and to delete that channel from pre-set on my radios

I was a late-comer to Steve Allen maybe the last year or so - he made a change from the World Service and Times Radio. as I dozed on/off. His one big plus was no phone-ins, I can't stand them!

He was witty at times, although woefully ignorant and ill-informed and very repetitive. Who doesn't enjoy making fun of pretentious celebrities, but he was just too vicious at times, particularly towards female celebs, often calling them old bags, even if they were in their 20s.

But putting my nurses hat on what astounded me was how much he talked about food, food and more food - it sounded liked he gorged and had no limits. He looks very overweight and has type 2 diabetes and is on insulin, however he talked non-stop about bags of hot potato waffles from MacDonalds to eat on his train commute back to Twickenham; more talk on the best mashed potato, sausages, ice cream, chocolates, cakes etc. If he didn't eat excessive amounts of highly processed carbs he might well have not needed to be on insulin.

He earned his spurs to be on the radio after many years slogging around clubs as a DJ and I did enjoy his tales of United Biscuits and his early years.

TopsyIrene06 Tue 28-Feb-23 08:51:45

He loved a sprout though didn't he..

hollysteers Tue 28-Feb-23 09:23:45

Fanny yes I have read Mr.Patel’s post which shows how popular SA is. Maybe he will transfer to Talk Radio or somewhere else. I listened to Rachel Johnson last night…

*BlueBelle’ Benny Hill has certainly dated, but he sure was funny and his sacking was a very sad business.

FannyCornforth Tue 28-Feb-23 09:53:54

I very much doubt if Talk Radio would have him.
He’s made plenty of enemies over there.
I think that he’s such a creature of habit that he would struggle to cope with a new work place, colleagues etc.
Also - he’d have to appears live on TV with Talk. He wouldn’t do that.

Wasn’t Benny Hill also a resident of Twickenham?
Another complex character.
A big of Antony Burgess I recently read!

I honestly don’t know what Steve will do now. Global must have a duty of care

FannyCornforth Tue 28-Feb-23 10:33:36

Yes, it ‘shows how popular he is’, but it also shows how frankly bonkers some of his followers are!
500 of them descending on his home town and harassing the shop keepers!
Steve-mania!

FishandChips15 Tue 28-Feb-23 10:56:49

FannyCornforth I have read your posts and agree with most of their content. Do you realise out of 86 posts you have written 41! Quite a fan!

FannyCornforth Tue 28-Feb-23 11:04:44

Yes! I know! Fancy you counting them!
I’ll happily admit that I’m a little bit obsessive about some very odd things!
I’ve listened to Steve pretty much every single morning for the full three hours for 18 (?) years.
I do feel as if I know him.
Well, I do I suppose… that’s how his other fans will feel too.
He revealed so much about himself.
As I said, he has made himself so vulnerable.
Absolutely no boundaries.
I also admit that I’d love to be a fly on the wall (on the high street?) in Twickenham at the moment.

I do hope that he’s okay.
Perhaps he should go and stay with the parents of his godchildren.
They have a big old place in the country, it could be exactly what he needs.
I don’t like to think of him holed up in his overflowing flat above the shops, hiding from the fans sad

maddyone Tue 28-Feb-23 11:12:38

Am I the only person in the country who has never heard of him and never listened to him?

FannyCornforth Tue 28-Feb-23 11:15:15

maddyone

Am I the only person in the country who has never heard of him and never listened to him?

Definitely not Maddy!
There’s pretty much only me posting on here!
(And one of Steve’s besieged neighbours, rather strangely)

FishandChips15 Tue 28-Feb-23 11:23:07

I used to lay in bed trying to envisage his flat and car full of all his purchases. He used also talk about his OTT hanging baskets.

maddyone Tue 28-Feb-23 11:23:35

Well that’s a relief Fanny. I was beginning to feel quite left out grin

PatelMamood2 Wed 01-Mar-23 10:37:53

Thank you 🙏 I have found Facebook pages (Fans) Steve Allen (former) LBC group and updated them to avoid area. I was brought here and digital spy via Google but believe most of these people come from a Facebook following.

PatelMamood2 Wed 01-Mar-23 10:38:20

Apologies for accusing you all

FannyCornforth Wed 01-Mar-23 10:51:51

Hello again Mr Patel.
That’s okay!
Yes, there is a big Steve Allen Facebook group.
They threw me out of the group because I didn’t 100% worship of the feet of St Steve of Twickenham!
Have things died down a bit now?
I do hope so, for you and Paul Cooper and Sandy’s too.
I expect (and hope) that Steve is staying with friends.
Best wishes to you

It's been lovely reading all these posts
About LBC.
I listen through the night on and off. It makes me feel I'm not alone, and it's a little family.
My favourite is Darren
But I'm happy with Ian and Richard.
Will continue to read out of interest what has become of SA

FannyCornforth Mon 06-Mar-23 05:42:40

Hello NannaMary
I’m so sad that Darren has left, he was my favourite too. So intelligent and kind.
I like Clive a lot too. I wish that he was on every night.
I don’t like Richard at all.
He used to be the breakfast presenter here on BBC Radio Derby, I think that was about his level.
I just don’t think that he’s up to the job.
I’d like to say that I had some news about Steve, but unfortunately I don’t

karmalady Mon 06-Mar-23 06:02:10

Sorry that there is no news. I would like to think that he is coping and adapting but I doubt it

Things have died down a little on the ‘boots on ground’ front however receiving all sorts of cards/gifts from fans of these Facebook groups. Between myself, chemist, fishmonger and greengrocer we have 93 parcels and I’ve lost count of cards for his birthday. We’re united in saying that we will not be taking in anymore deliveries and instructing couriers and postal services to ‘return to sender’ as we can’t say when he’s set on returning to the area. Iceland and marks have even received gifts for him but they have separate protocols in place by destruction. We are only small shops trying to make a living yet our days are spent trying to find space to store all this stuff with no end in sight and yes some may argue we are a packing/sending company however we didn’t factor in the influx of packages to keep on-site for x amount of time. I have tried joining these groups however falls on deaf ears 👂 which has resulted in our joint decision to refuse delivery. I will keep you updated.
