For anybody who hasn't seen it before, Victoria Wood's lovely musical That Day We Sang is on UKTV Play. It stars Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton. A treat.

I saw it the first time round and thoroughly enjoyed watching it again. She had the 70s spot on, Kardomah, Matchmakers and all!

It’s a lovely film based on a real story. In 1929, children from schools all over Manchester were recorded singing Nymphs and Shepherds by Purcell. If you want to hear the recording it is on YouTube. All you need to search is Manchester Children’s Choir. The idea came from Walter Carroll, who composed many delightful pieces for children in the early part of the twentieth century. He was passionate about music education. It is very moving to hear the recording nearly one hundred years on.

Nymphs and Shepherds used to be played quite frequently on the radio when I was young, Musicgirl.

It is a lovely film, I'll have to try to watch it again.

We used to sing nymphs and shepherds at school and I still remember the words.
