Did anyone else watch this fascinating programme on Wednesday evening. Presented by the lovely Patrick Grant it was so interesting. A family firm that has been making ceremonial wear for four generations and is faced with a mountain of work before the coronation. It was a reminder that the troops being fitted for some of these incredible outfits are still serving soldiers with a long history in Iraq and Afghanistan. The detailed work and care taken, right down to the beautifully tailored coat for the Irish Guards' wolfhound, is amazing and it was all the more enjoyable because of course Patrick knew what they were talking about and didn't have to keep asking the usual dim celebrity questions

the presenters do not write the script or devise the shape and content of the programme.
they merely present or voice the links to the audience.

Paddy O'Connell, just off the top of my head.
anyone where it would have been entirely about the work of the businesses and not about the presenter.
i found that intrusive and detracting from the point of interest.

Is there anyone you have heard of who could have presented a better program. As you’ve never heard of Patrick Grant you’ll probably have a job coming up with a name.

Foxygloves Sat 06-May-23 21:30:52

He’s a respected Savile Row tailor, surely it is better to have an expert to comment?
And an experienced presenter (Sewing Bee) - what more do you want?

welbeck Sat 06-May-23 21:06:17

well i'd never heard of the presenter and i'd have preferred the programme had a professional presenter and was all about the two businesses rather than about him as well.
i realise that you all seem smitten with him.
i was very interested in kashket and in firmins;
not in the moustachioed one.
that's my personal feeling and i'm entitled to it.

I spotted the mounted standard bearer who was featured in Patrick’s programme. He looked immaculate, as did his horse.

A fascinating programme, unbelievable to see the skills required. Patrick Grant was the right person to present the programme although he is not a tailor but does understand the process as he is a designer. However I do think that some of his decisions on GBSB can be a bit suspect.

Fabulous programme, it was a joy to watch. Wonderful to see such skills still exist in this country. The helmet maker in particular fascinated me, plus his truly historical shaping tool.

i found the man presenting a bit annoying.
loved seeing kashket and co, also firmin in b'ham.

Who - Patrick? 😲
Never!

Deedaa Fri 05-May-23 21:24:44

I'm glad so many people enjoyed it, and of course Patrick is always a bonus! The man making the helmet was incredible.

I really enjoyed this programme,I found it fascinating in the days of cheap throwaway fashion to see the skill of the people involved was wonderful and Patrick Grant is very easy to watch.and so knowledgeable.

I love anything like this, I follow several costumers on YouTube.

Darn - not available here. I find this kind of show fascinating. I love fashion and enjoy seeing the design and skill involved. I also think BBC does some really good television, but we tend to be a year behind with programming once the rights to air it are sold to other networks.

We loved this programme, so much history and so many interesting stories. The dedication of the Kashkets and their workforce, the guy making the helmets, the files of hand-written and drawn patterns - and of course lovely Patrick Grant, bringing it all together. I think we'll be watching this again once the Coronation is over, just to take it all in again.

Thanks DeeDaa, for recommending this programme. We watched it this afternoon and there was so much to marvel at.
I love the fact that The Tailors were a family firm, as was the Birmingham firm Firmin.

While not detracting from the incredible skills in the making of these uniforms, I couldn’t help but wonder about the equally incredible costs involved. All that gold velvet and bespoke fabric must cost an absolute fortune. Would love to see a break down of that from the MOD. Shame they can’t put as much care into the design and fabrication of their aircraft carriers.

Caramme Fri 05-May-23 14:17:45

So glad you highlighted this Deedaa. I have just watched it and it was totally fascinating. So much skill. Thank you.

Primrose53 Fri 05-May-23 13:16:43

It was fantastic. Even my husband was engrossed. He particularly enjoyed seeing all the ancient machinery still in use today. Imagine just 2 people can make those helmets and we saw one of them!! I hope he is paid well, because that is such a unique job.

Patrick is adorable and IMO was the perfect choice to present this lovely programme.

Will now be looking for the little mixed race guy who was featured in the full regalia and who said he will be riding immediately behind the gold coach. He said he will be leaving the army in the near future and came from Coalville, Leics.

No! Have to agree to differ.
Patrick Grant is a highly respected Savile Row tailor and knows his craft inside out. (He also presents Sewing Bee.)
I can’t think of a better qualified presenter to understand the detail and skill that we saw in evidence in that programme.
Saddened though to think that when some of the craftsmen we saw retire or pass on, there may be nobody to carry on the tradition.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 05-May-23 12:05:23

I am in awe at the skills and dedication shown.

MiniMoon Fri 05-May-23 11:59:01

It was on BBC 2 on Wednesday evening.

Howjado Fri 05-May-23 10:21:09

Can I watch this programme on catch up? Sorry I missed it. What’s channel was it on please?

Sidelined Fri 05-May-23 10:17:13

I was doubly glad to watch this programme because It brought back childhood memories. Back in the 60s I lived on the corner of the road this workshop is in and I’m always glad to hear good things about the neighbourhood. I’ll watch the Coronation tomorrow with extra interest.
