BBC TV Presenter for the Coronation

I have already been forced to turn over from BBC to ITV for coverage of the Coronation. Kirsty Young is pretty much impossible to understand - as a deaf person who wears hearing aids as well as relying heavily on lip reading - I have struggled with her diction and lack of clarity with her speech. Who on earth decided that she would be a good anchor-person for such a prestigious event?
So having switched over to ITV - Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham are actually more vibrant and pleasant to listen to - I am amazed at how clear they all sound even when the cameras are not actually on them. Whinge over!! Enjoy your cakes, champagne, coffee or whatever while the pageantry unfolds!!

I like Kirsty Young but Huw Edwards is sooo dreary. I do miss the incomparable Richard Dimbleby whose voice and diction were perfect.

BBC did at least let us listen to the glorious music without waffling on.

I wish people wouldn't be so rude about people's accents

I have to admit to not even knowing who was commentating as I watched the coronation with my friend. I wanted to watch the ceremony, people coming into the Abbey and noseying at what they were wearing, and the balcony appearance. I'm not at all interested in talking heads, though I did find India Hicks interesting to hear.

I prefer the documentaries and the factual stuff rather than interviewing randoms on the street and lining up people in sofas.

And here’s a “dreadful woman”

So sorry if all the royals are white Adjoa. Imagine if we said the balcony was “too black.”

Richard Dimbleby was right for the times in which he commentated great events of State but he would be too unctuous for the present day.

Add me to the list please. Starkey is an abhorrent man with racial views that shouldn’t be held in a modern world, let alone broadcast.

Clawdy Sun 07-May-23 08:10:30

Another one here who can't stand Starkey. Dreadful man.

Siope Sat 06-May-23 21:57:33

Starkey is regarded, by his peers as a mediocre (to be polite) historian, and he is indubitably a racist. He lost his publishing contract as a result.

One hearing aid heard her ok.

I like Kirsty Young, as others have said, her voice is soft and warm, not all Scottish accents are. I can hear her perfectly well, as can DH who wears two hearing aids. Can’t stand David Starkey even if his knowledge is encyclopaedic!

I always use subtitles, not because of deafness but because they help me understand peculiar accents and poor speech.

I like KirstyYoung’s voice and her soft accent.

I loved GBnews coverage today and especially the knowledge and commentary given by David Starkey. I did switch around at first but only lasted a few seconds on other channels. Disliked BBC1 intensely

Starkey is so genned up on the history of the royals that he doesn’t even have to stop and think when someone asks him a question. His memory for facts and dates is remarkable. I admire him very much.

I'm sick of Clare Balding being on everything. I have to say, though, that she knew her stuff for today's commentary.

Beckett

I found her voice to be monotonous and boring - switched off

I did too and flicked between channels.

I watched bbc. despite poor hearing i understood the presenter very well.
My second coronation, and it rained on the last one too, and yes it was Claire Balding.

Calendargirl Sat 06-May-23 16:10:26

I thought Clare Balding did a great job.

Clear, concise, knowledgeable.

Callistemon21 Sat 06-May-23 16:08:18

Yes, I do too.

Her accent isn't strong, it's very gentle.

Aveline Sat 06-May-23 16:04:56

BBC presentation was perfect for me. I like Kirsty Young. She has a warm voice.

Callistemon21 Sat 06-May-23 16:03:15

Was that Clare Balding on BBC?
She does seem to be ubiquitous now

Nana Akua is just coming on GB News. She is a breath of fresh air on TV, she really is. A bright, sassy, professional presenter who is not afraid to say what she thinks.

I’m watching Sky at the moment, but have flicked through all the channels with coverage, including the much disliked ( on Gransnet) GB News. I’m getting a feel for all of them. I think I prefer Sky at the moment but may switch to BBC for the actual coronation.

Do you really care what people on Gransnet think about GB News Channel? I couldn’t give a stuff! 🤣🤣

I thought their coverage of the Coronation was excellent. Dr David Starkey was fantastic and his knowledge of the history of the royals is magnificent. I went out for a couple of hours and Alistair Stewart was on when I got back and he was very confident and easy to listen to as well.

Dr DS is on again, as I write, talking about his memories of the 1953 Coronation, when he was 8 years old. Very interesting.

Oldbat1 Sat 06-May-23 15:27:58

I like Kirsty Young soft Scottish accent but will admit she isnt the easiest to lip read. I wear two hearing aids but i could understand her fine. There was a bit of interference though - weather?

Charleygirl5 Sat 06-May-23 15:19:06

BigBertha it certainly was not you. I watched bits of it on ITV and the sound was variable. It could well have been the weather.

Kim I agree, I would have loved to have heard that lady sing instead of the ITV presenters talking over her.
