The programme was not just about loneliness. It also covered the cost of living, not putting their heating on, only eating one meal a day, etc.

What about trying Age Concern?

Who would I contact in order to volunteer to spend time with an elderly person? I know my mum used to get terribly lonely and I used to go round most days, sometimes twice a day. I shall make a point of watching this on catch up.

I remember donkeys years ago I used to visit an elderly Jewish lady who was entirely alone. She was a dear and delight. I used to get her shopping, spend time chatting and doing odd jobs for her. I can’t even remember how I got in touch with her. I lasted until she was taken to hospital, and never saw her again.

I watched it. It was heartbreaking. I feel guilty because I was going to join a local organisation that arranges visits to lonely older people but I felt that I wouldn’t have the time or energy to commit to it. Plus the fact that I’m away from home a lot.
