First night tonight at 7pm BBC2

I always look forward to the Proms and will watch as many as I can. A highlight of summer for me.

Andras Schiff played wonderfully a concerto, and then after going out and coming in and doing that again he did a grade 4 piece by Schumann about a merry farmer coming home from work, it was rather a come down after such a big concerto
on the steinway piano, but I think it was good because it proved that children's music does really have a place at the Proms, to inspire the beginners as well as the more advanced.

I always feel sad when the Last Night is over. Although the weather is telling us otherwise it really is the end of summer. Time to pack away the memories that the music always evokes and get on with getting on. 🙃🤣

What a wonderful performance from Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha. Such sublime singing and Pata Pata at the end made me think of our dear Phoenix

Oh yes sad

Doesn't it just!
I think these very hot evenings lead us to believe it's still high summer!
I really enjoy Marin Alsop. Excellent documentary about her not long ago, IIRC.

Last Night seems to have come round quickly this year. Just settling down for a night of great music and singing. 🥳🇬🇧🇬🇧👏👏🍷

The National Youth Orchestra are joyous tonight!

Very much enjoyed Andras Schiff’s Schumann tonight, and his encores!

Callistemon21 Fri 18-Aug-23 19:55:18

Yes, that was a joy!

merlotgran Fri 18-Aug-23 19:52:59

Yes isn’t it?

I’ve had a fraught week and feel a bit wrung out. This is just what I need - along with a chilled Sauvignon Blanc. 🤣

ixion Fri 18-Aug-23 19:38:52

What a joy to listen to Weber and Schumann tonight after the turbulence of the 6 o'clock news.

merlotgran Fri 11-Aug-23 19:02:45

Really looking forward to tonight’s concert.

Luckygirl3 Sun 06-Aug-23 21:57:31

Splendid concert this evening. I love having a live orchestra in my living room!

Fleurpepper

Yes, same here. And the young pianist earlier was just amazing.

I’m going to watch Isata Kanneh-Mason on iPlayer because I had visitors earlier and they stayed just a little bit longer than I hoped they would 😩

Watching Tchaikovsky’s 5th at the moment.

I watched because of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. I'm afraid that I didn't enjoy the improvisations between the movements. The Promenaders seemed to enjoy it though.

Just watched this. Enjoyed it all. Loved PK

merlotgran Fri 21-Jul-23 21:25:29

Yes. I’m dog sitting a poorly old Jack Russell (Peggy’s brother) with an ear infection. He’s had his drops and is all ready for Beethoven!

ixion Fri 21-Jul-23 21:15:06

Anyone Promming tonight?

Greyduster Mon 17-Jul-23 21:18:54

I watched John Wilson conducting the fiendish Walton Partita for Orchestra and it was mesmerising. He has an amazing rapport with his musicians and they never fail to give wonderful performances whether they are playing serious classics or Hollywood greats.

Dinahmo Mon 17-Jul-23 21:04:44

I thought that the performance was brilliant. I hadn't heard of Pekka Kuusisto but I've become a fan. I was amazed at how he managed to conduct and play the violin at the same time. The orchestra enjoyed it as well. Classical music does not need to stand still, mired in the past.

The clip of Malcolm Sargent reminded me of the days when the Flash Harry fans used to wave Flash packets instead of flags.

The dull and inane chit chat between items has reached new depths. So boring and so destructive of the mood. Who wants to hear Toksvig rabbiting on? What purpose does she serve?

My problem with clapping between movements, especially in a concerto, is it breaks the spell when silence would be more appropriate.

It must surely be off putting for the soloists.
