I do wish that there were captions when the camera zooms in on someone watching. I spend ages trying to work out if I should know them and, if so, who the Dickens they are and could easily miss a vital bit of the action.

I presume they are 'someone' of the camera wouldn't zoom in!!

John Inverdale is even worse that Andrew Castle!!!

JenniferEccles Tue 18-Jul-23 13:45:16

Oh thank you Fanny. John Inverdale, yes!

I hadn’t realised how long ago it was though.

FannyCornforth Tue 18-Jul-23 12:53:25

It was! The cheeky so and so!

It wasn’t John Inverdale was it?

Which commentator was it some years back who caused a fuss when he remarked that one of the female players had to be good because she “was never going to be a looker”?

I can’t remember which commentator it was or the name of the girl he was referring to.

Smileless2012 Tue 18-Jul-23 11:06:42

Oh I remember how bad McEnroe was Callistemon but liked him and still do.

jmsburnham Tue 18-Jul-23 11:01:04

So did I - sadly it never happened!!

One of my most favourite things about Wimbledon and the proceeding tournaments is that it keeps Andrew Castle off LBC for a few weeks.

He presents the weekend breakfast shows and is blooming awful.

He’s ill informed, bombastic and in a state of permanent fury

It’s the Andrew Castle awful commentary! Incessant chat! Nothing to do with tennis most of the time! One moment he said Medev was ‘galloping’ and jolloping??? Then pure waffle.
Can the Beeb just get McEnroe and Castle to be quiet! We don’t need a full scale autopsy at every shot!
And why the chatter over an hour before the actual final?
Well done to the Royal children sitting for 5hrs, although they did disappear with their father for a bit.
Another question: who pays for all the ‘celebs’ in the Royal box and other ‘est’ seats?
Fab tournament, a shame Roger and Rafa weren’t in the audience 👍

At one point he said 'family, trainers' doctors, fitness'. Nothing else I wish he would just stop prattling on.

There is no need to comment on anything except the match.

It's as if he thinks if there's a silence, he has to fill it with meaningless prattle.

And the BBC has just as many adverts as ITV now.

I miss Dan Maskell. :-(

School used to take us to the North West Open at Didsbury, it was a few weeks before Wimbledon. We got to see all the big names, it was wonderful. My memory tells me it never rained 😊

MillieBoris Mon 17-Jul-23 17:15:03

Not bad for 59….

Callistemon21 Mon 17-Jul-23 15:32:26

People forget what a 'bad boy' John McEnroe was!

Before him was Jimmy Connors but his behaviour paled into insignificance when McEnroe arrived on the scene.
Arguing with the Umpire, shouting and smashing racquets.

And there he is, commentating like the father of tennis. 😁

Foxyferret Mon 17-Jul-23 14:52:59

I think Andy is next to Laura Robson. I remember Henry le Conte,( probably wrong spelling) he was good fun and a good player.

knspol Mon 17-Jul-23 14:52:31

Who was the man sitting next to Murray before the doubles partner came on the scene, was it his brother?

Smileless2012 Mon 17-Jul-23 14:30:39

On no Babamamam not McEnroe but total agreement about AC. His hero worship of Djokovic is rather sickly.

Ellie Anne Mon 17-Jul-23 14:23:41

I agree about the ‘ celebrities’. I don’t know who they are either.

Well, not to be outdone, I saw John Newcombe play Tony Roche on centre court in 1969, having recently finished A levels. I’m sure my love of tennis was based solely on all those fit players …
Does anyone remember Tom Okker (alias Knocker Okker)? My best friend was madly in love with him, but I don’t think he was around for long.

JPB123 Mon 17-Jul-23 13:37:49

My gripe is the commentator Andrew Castle, pontificating prat.
He goes on and on,instead of letting us enjoy the tennis.
I have always loved Wimbledon and will continue to watch.
Even in the newspapers today Andrew Castle has been
critised.Nick Kyrios said that whoever the clown was ,he should not speak.

I ball girled for John Newcombe in 1961!
He was lovely but a bit old for me even then. I was rooting for cheeky Chuck McKinley 😍
Our school provided ball girls for Queen's Club a week or two before Wimbledon.

Wow how lucky was that!

Anyone remember Henri Leconte? He was the one that made me swoon.

I was lucky enough to be at Wimbledon on Saturday and caught Pat Cash just as he’d come off an outside court and was posing for photos.

Grandma14 Mon 17-Jul-23 13:15:44

Sorry you're all wrong - John Newcombe was mine!!!!

Borrheid55 Mon 17-Jul-23 13:04:50

Loved John Newcombe and Stan Smith, Ilie Nastase, Arthur Ashe, that was my era!
