Finding tonight's play 'The Sixth Commandment' a difficult watch

After watching this play up until the remaining 10 minutes, I decided that it was too painful to watch any longer. Mind you I could be completely wrong in surmising about the direction in which I am presuming it is heading. Just couldn't bear to watch it any more,

I have enough to cope with in real life BlueBelle.

I was just going to write exactly that Merylstreep the cast is so perfectly portrayed both Ben and Peter look very like their real life people especially Ben, he’s almost a double
I don’t think it was any more depressing than real life is Sparklefizz I think it is being so well portrayed we should NEVER forget people like Peter and although I remember the case it had gone out my head and I couldn’t remember the finer details
We can’t have happiness and jolliness in every programme there has to be light and shade and sometimes the shade is very very dark both families of Peter and Anne gave their blessings and want it to be kept in the public eye and if it makes one elderly person think twice before opening their door and their heart it will have done a good job
Perfect acting

I watched 3 episodes last night. So tempted to watch the last one but early start today.
What I found disturbing was the likeness of Ben to the real Ben.
I will admit I have a fascination with evil people.

We binge watched this last night.

Remember the case well, but this brilliantly acted drama shone new light on aspects.

A truly vile crime.

Sparklefizz Tue 18-Jul-23 07:11:07

I watched the first episode and it was depressing. When I saw there were 3 more depressing episodes to go, I couldn't continue.

Evil does seem so often to come with a gentle face though.

There are so many examples. Look at the case of the nurses and doctors over the years who have killed their patients.

The human psyche is unfathomable at times.

FannyCornforth Tue 18-Jul-23 06:59:51

I read about the case yesterday morning, and made a firm decision that I definitely won’t be watching it.

I remember the case and reading about it in the papers. It was so bizarre and dreadful, I had an irrational feeling that it could not possibly have happened in the UK. It was the sort of thing that only happened in the USA! Bt of course it did happen in the UK.

It is also a salutary reminder that evil people will hide, like wolves in sheep's clothing and will enter the caring professions, whether it is a s carers, teachers or ministers of religion in order to exploit other people.

So many people are so shocked when priests, ministers, carers abuse people. They are meant to be 'men of God' caring people etc. It never occurs to them that it is not a question of 'ministers devoted to God who go bad, rather bad people choosing to become 'ministers of God' for the opportunities it offers.

It is tragic that lonely and vulnerable people are so easily manipulated by charismatic individuals intent on inflicting such harm.

I don’t find it uncomfortable , but do find it heartbreaking that such gentle kindly souls like Spall’s character are so vulnerable to such evil.

I listened to a podcast on this and was truly amazed that the awful Ben was not a suspect initially.

The drama has shown how he duped people into believing him.

The 2 main characters are very well done.

Doodledog Tue 18-Jul-23 06:25:33

It is very well acted. I watched one episode last night, and will see the rest this evening. I don’t remember the case at all, so whereas it is clear what is happening it’s not going over old ground for me.

WE do know;is it necessary to dramatize it?
I found it very uncomfortable and stopped watching.

You could say that about many things that are shown, any real life happenings that are then dramatised.

I thought it was marvellous. We watch most things with Timothy Spall as he is just so good. Watched two episodes last night, two more tonight.
Harrowing but something decent to watch amongst so much dross.

vegansrock Tue 18-Jul-23 04:27:45

This had a 5 star review I read, it has a great cast but it sounds harrowing so may give it a miss.

Callistemon21 Mon 17-Jul-23 23:31:29

I find him an inspiration.

Not sure if I want to watch this, though

Kate1949 Mon 17-Jul-23 23:27:41

Yes Timothy had leukemia in the 90s. I believe his weight loss is deliberate. He is a great actor.

Deedaa Mon 17-Jul-23 23:23:25

Timothy Spall is such a good actor, one of those who lifts any production he is in. Sarah Phelps' writing seems better in this than in some of her awful Agatha Christie adaptations.

Callistemon21 Mon 17-Jul-23 23:18:33

I thought it was very well done was shocked at Timothy Spalls appearance I don’t follow stars and didn’t realise he’d been so ill
Has he been ill again? I really hope not. I knew he had been ill years ago but thought he had made a good recovery.
His weight loss was deliberate, I thought.

We have recorded this as we watched Chris Packham's interesting programme on BBC2.

Clawdy Mon 17-Jul-23 23:10:58

A difficult watch but so well-acted, especially the young guy playing Ben.

ginny Mon 17-Jul-23 22:48:30

Yes, uncomfortable viewing especially as it was a case so local to me.
Timothy Spall is a brilliant actor.

henetha Mon 17-Jul-23 22:46:30

Marvellously acted I thought.
I shall stick with it.

25Avalon Mon 17-Jul-23 22:43:25

Viewing figures will show how many people actually watched. It was uncomfortable viewing but it is a salutary tale.

Of course it s a difficult watch it was a terrible case but we need to watch things like this to make sure we re all aware of what can happen in this world and how easily some elderly or some ‘anybody’ can be manipulated and harmed
Look at all the women who are taken in by long distance romances we can all be so naive in ‘love’ situations

Yes a difficult watch, but it happens, we need to know

BigBertha1 Mon 17-Jul-23 22:25:24

Spall! Sorry for the typo
