Well, I expected better from the BBC.
How bad can the acting be?
Did anyone else waste an hour, hoping it could improve?

Sarah Vine’s review was totally negative

Sorry, it wasn't Sarah Vine it was Hannah Flett. Sarah Vine usually writes a review page in the DM television magazine which is included in the Saturday paper. She must have been on holiday that week. I wrongly assumed it was her review. Apologies to Sarah Vine though I doubt she is on GN

I enjoyed the twists and turns. I did find the dialogue a bit quickly mumbled in places. I’m going to rewatch the last episode.

It was very good tbh I didn't find it that gruesome having seen much worse on TV. It was so much more about threat of violence and creating fear. The over the top acting in the first episode was all part of the story. It was a clever plot which kept me guessing and engaged. Roll on a second series.

Watched the last episode yesterday evening. Very clever the way it all came together at the end. I'm hoping that there will be a second series.

I was very put off by the first episode but I gave it another go yesterday and was so drawn in that I binge watched it all. It is bonkers in places but it all comes together in the final episode. There is a cliffhanger so I expect there will be a second series. I am glad that I didn't give up on it and will now look for the books.

I read earlier posts on this thread and wasn't going to watch the series. My friend said she had watched it and really enjoyed it and suggested I give it a go.
As soon as I started watching I realised I had read all the Mo Hayder books and I knew how Jack Caffrey's mind worked. I knew the back story to his life.
You have to watch to the very end to get the full story.

Iam64, thankyou for the info.
I will definitely look out for the Mo Hyder books revolving round the Jack Caferty character. Think they'll be my kind of thing.

I’m enjoying it. I wasn’t sure after the first episode but a friend binge watched it and said to keep watching . I like the back story for one of the fake coppers and the twists and turns especially regarding the couple in the big house.

Iam64 Thu 10-Aug-23 16:50:31

Have you read Mo Hyder’s books Barberdice? Wolf is based on the Jack Caferty novels. Dark well written gripping

Barberdice Thu 10-Aug-23 16:15:01

Fantastic series. So different to anything I've ever watched before.
Twists and turns galore.
Loved it.

Sarah Vine’s review was totally negative

PinkCosmos Thu 10-Aug-23 12:24:24

I had planned to watch this but was put off by a very bad review by Sarah Vine in the DM. Then I read this thread and thought I should make my own mind up.

I quite like dark and quirky (Inside No. 9 and League of Gentlemen type stuff).

I watched the first two episodes last night and really enjoyed it. It was a bit gruesome but not that bad really. I am planning to watch the remaining episodes tonight.

I am with you Farzanah. We have it on as DH wants to see how it ends and I only watch with half an eye. Perhaps that is why I find it boring!

Farzanah Thu 10-Aug-23 09:30:56

I’m watching it each week, and tbh was quite bored this week.

dogsmother Wed 09-Aug-23 13:27:14

I’m loving it still. Each episode I get tempted to go binge and see what’s to come………but what would be next for Monday and Tuesday viewing.

HousePlantQueen Wed 09-Aug-23 12:43:40

I think it has improved as it has gone on, although I liked it from the off. The development of the fake policemen's characters and background has been very interesting, especially last night when we saw the Asian one talking to his very nice, pregnant wife. I think that he saw this as an acting role, and that the Welsh one we thought was the weaker, more stupid of the team is the smarter. The business with the bucket of guts is intriguing and it is interesting seeing the Asian 'policeman' being spooked by strange happenings, being frightened.

Watched last night's episode last night without the faintest idea of what was going on but it was held my attention. Clearly very black humour, verging on the sadistic, not sure I will watch it again, but if the alternative is Chris Packham, I may well.
He is extremely boring; the subject deserves a better presenter.

I finished it last night, very dark and as merlot says, clever, I read the books years ago. This adaptation was slightly different or so my memory says. What was captured though, was the increasing sense of doom. The Jack Caffrey actor was superb, in fact an excellent cast.
I’m looking forward to the 2nd series

merlotgran Tue 08-Aug-23 18:37:01

I’ve seen them all now and really enjoyed it after almost giving up at the beginning.

It’s clever!

Farzanah Tue 08-Aug-23 18:26:17

Dear me. I think you need a strong stomach for this, but I’m still watching 😱

foxie48 Tue 08-Aug-23 11:01:02

I've just watched the second episode and think it's a bit different but very good. I'll certainly be watching the rest of it, OH is also hooked!

The BBC are very good at "spoilers", so after the trailers and interviews with the actors we already knew the "detectives" were nothing of the sort. There is much more to the plot than that - I don't know why people are only focusing on those characters and not on the wider story and the other characters.

Luckily I don’t watch any spoilers or trailers, so all the twists and turns came as little shocks and held my attention. For those who didn’t get past episode 1 you missed some fun ( Noir Crime with black humour) - I really enjoyed it…particularly the ‘Opera ‘ scene!

Well I enjoyed it.

So did I…considering the subject matter I thought the acting excellent, with lesser actors it could have descended into farce and been stupid…as it was, it held the attention throughout. Not exactly a literary masterpiece but the black humour was superb! I binge watched and was gripped by it!

Gossamerbeynon1945 Wed 02-Aug-23 19:26:25

I didn't like it! I found it scary! Thats just me, though.
