Gyles Brandreth has begun a stint as a guest host with Alexander Armstrong on the above and I love his cheerful and confident manner.

Although it's obviously a matter of personal choice I feel that he should be a 'shoe-in' to do this permanently - surely the job is just made for him? What do others think?

I saw Mr Brandreth for the first time yesterday and was initially very pleased, but quickly very disappointed. I think Stephen Mangan has been head and shoulders above everyone else.

(But I don't watch the programme).

Oooh, I forgot Stephen Mangan. blush

I loooove Stephen Mangan. Loathe Alexander Armstrong.

TanaMa Sat 19-Aug-23 15:09:51

Definitely prefer Steven Mangan - wouldn't mind him as a permanent fixture!

I can't stand Gyles Brandreth either, find him smug, irritating and generally annoying. I've just surprised myself too, I thought I was more tolerant than that!

Missiseff Sat 19-Aug-23 13:15:52

Can't stand the man. Not watching while he's doing it. Tried it, found him as self-righteous, up-himself and irritating as he always is.

YorkLady Sat 19-Aug-23 13:15:50

Oh dear! I really like Gyles. Entertaining especially on QI.
He’s one of my fantasy dinner party guests! 😁

Retread Sat 19-Aug-23 12:55:37

Please not Giles, sorry Gyles (even the way he spells his name is irritating! grin )

Totally up his own backside. I happened to be in a café once where he was holding court, and the whole place had to listen to him booming away. 🙉

Just get rid of Alexander Armstrong who clearly has been there too long - so full of his own importance and so, so repetitive in each programme now. Surely he can think of some variation of 'not bad'!

I'm with you Grannyjacql. Have you noticed that he takes every opportunity to pretend he is eating, drinking or chewing. I have to go away until he's finished. I assume that it's his best 'party piece'!

PS Sorry to be a miserable Mona but no, I don't want Richard Osman back, though I do like his House of Games, but that's more thanks to the question writers and competitors than him.

Fae1 Sat 19-Aug-23 12:27:21

I agree "Richard Osman loves himself" too much. Couldn't stand him. Glad he's gone! Several of the guest hosts have been good. It can't be easy stepping into someone else's shoes especially when it's a longstanding show like Pointless.

IamMaz Sat 19-Aug-23 12:19:37

I went to a recording of Pointless. Neither Alexander Armstrong nor Richard Osman made any connection with the audience AT ALL. Both on their phones or tablets etc….. It was very disappointing.

But Bradley Walsh on the Chase!!!! He was all in the audience and absolutely great.

biglouis Sat 19-Aug-23 12:19:27

I can never see th sense in these programs. They bore me.

missdeke Sat 19-Aug-23 12:15:16

I understand that Richard Osman invented the game. I would love to have a dinner party with him as main guest with Giles, Steven and a few of the women guest hosts too and ask Richard to choose his successor. Personally I would have Giles and Steven altenately.

I have seen odd bits of this show but don't watch it regularly, so may not be entitled to voice an opinion. Still, I will say that Gyles Brandeth is a big turn-off for me, because he finds himself so amusing.

I love him too. Mostly I wish Richard Osman would come back.

Me too. He's a secret crush😊🥰

Dizzyribs Sat 19-Aug-23 11:41:30

Really didn’t like Konnie Haq, stopped watching when she was on. I felt she treated us all as if we were three (mind, even my children thought the same when she was on Blue Peter ) so patronising.
I loved Alex Brooker- felt he and Zander had a great rapport.

Sparklefizz Sat 19-Aug-23 11:34:14

I totally agree Grannyjacq1. He's so insincere and gushing. His travel programmes are awful too. He just keeps saying "Wow" and "Awesome". Grrr.

Gyles is fantastic - could listen to him all day. Miss him on Countdown - he's not been the Dictionary Corner guest for ages.

Blinko Sat 19-Aug-23 11:18:35

I liked Ed Gamble. Or it could have been Rob Beckett. I get them confused somehow. Off Mock the Week, anyway…

JdotJ Sat 19-Aug-23 11:17:49

I've liked a lot of the Pointless guests inc Lauren Laverne and Ria Lina, was sorry when both their stints ended.

Sparklefizz Fri 18-Aug-23 07:40:52

Yes, Giles Brandreth talks far too much.

dragonfly46 Fri 18-Aug-23 07:39:46

Another vote for Stephen Mangan. Giles Brandreth talks too much and I don’t like Richard Osman for some reason.

DanniRae Fri 18-Aug-23 07:31:50

Oh, I loved Steve (as I call him smile) on Pointless! I liked Richard too but he's no Steve. wink Can't stand Giles Brandreth ... he's too up himself for me hmm
