An Italian survey found that footballers were slightly more likely to get MND. Other factors are at play, such as stress, pollution, hereditary which is why it has been difficult for scientists to pinpoint a specific cause. Research is being done worldwide to find a cure with an international symposium every other year.

It's been said that the research is a bit like trying to complete an extremely large jigsaw puzzle with tens of thousands of pieces. They've arranged the edge pieces but are battling with the centre - and of course there's no picture on the box. They remain hopeful that one day a cure will be found.

My brother had MND - cruel disease. Is it a myth that it affects mostly sportsmen ? My brother was very athletic - played cricket and golf….would be interesting to know the statistics..

I missed the recent repeat of this programme but saw it when it first aired. I steeled myself to watch it then as I knew I would shed tears.

I lost my dear husband to this cruel disease almost thirteen years ago and it was hell. The wonderful people at the MND Association and the hospice were so supportive, I don't what we would have done without them.

Watching the man I loved most of all succumb to this was terrible and although I paint on a smile each day and get on with things I will never truly get over it. Hopefully one day a cure will be found.

I saw it when it was first on. Heartbreaking.

I did know about this illness before, but how unbelievably cruel it is. I thought his wife was wonderful. It is such a test of the strength of a relationship.
