I think The Singing Detective was the best of Dennis Potter's extraordinary tv serial plays. Michael Gambon really seemed to put his heart and soul into that part.
We can only suppose that Dennis Potter put his everything into The Singing Detective. He died from the effects of his psoriasis.

Wonderful actor. To my mind his was the best portrayal of Oscar Wilde. He moved me to tears in the scene when he was crying and his son asked him why:-
“Beautiful things always make me cry” (or similar)
R.I.P.

I saw the singing detective, at least I saw a bit of it, I didn't enjoy it. However he was a brilliant actor nd will be sadly missed in the acting world.

It’s strange isn’t it that the psoriasis sufferers have commented!

There is shocking ignorance about psoriasis - and I think the singing detective was the only show with anyone even mentioning psoriasis.

Apart from Kim Kardashian I don’t know anyone else ever mentioning it.

So sad a brilliant actor - as a psoriasis sufferer I thought he played the part to perfection and I remember colleagues at work finally understanding what I was going through after watching it.

I only really remember him as the Singing Detective - a psoriatic mess with flaking skin and bandages in a hospital bed is pretty much my only memory of that series. It was a bit off putting to watch all those flakes of skin! Maybe it was comedic I can’t recall now. His acting will have brought pleasure to a whole new fan base via Harry Potter I dare say.
RIP Sir.

He was 82 and died peacefully in hospital following a bout of pneumonia. He’s probably best known as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films but I will always think of him as Marlowe in The Singing Detective.
RIP Sir Michael
