Cow: a film about a cow….

Just watched it on iplayer. I was shattered after a long journey so crashed out on the sofa with iplayer on and it followed something I was watching. I’m certainly not recommending it but, boy did it draw me in the way that good documentaries do. No voiceover or anything, just the occasional snippet of conversation from vets or farm workers. Occasional background music. It wasn’t aimed at anyone in particular ie wasn’t made to turn everyone vegan. It really has left me thinking, though, although I don’t quite know what about. I won’t become vegan because of it because I like milk in my tea and cheese is my favourite food. I’ve just read several reviews about the film and the consensus seems to be that it won’t turn people into vegans but it will make you look at cows in a different light. And once again I’m fascinated by the art of documentary making.

As I said, I’m not recommending it. But it’s really affected me. The sheer process of filming something for many years plus the editing of what must have been an astronomical amount of footage fascinates me. I think it was Molly Dineen(?) many years ago that started making documentaries similar to this. Then, of course, there are the amazing Ed Burns documentaries. On must Watch they said his Vietnam is probably the best documentary ever made (I haven’t seen it).
