I've just watched the first episode of this series which covers the period from 1603 to the beginning of the 18thC and the Act of Union.

When James V1 of Scotland succeeded to the English throne he wanted to unite Scotland and England, which at that time included Wales. Apparently the Scots were quite keen but the English were not.

I found it fascinating because DO explains how the Welsh and also parts of Ireland were brought under English control, usually with violence.

I knew some of the history but not all of it. For example, Northumberland had the largest number of castles and forts of any English county but there are no medieval houses there because the Scots burnt them all.

I can recommend to anyone who is interested in the history of the British Isles

I like all his series especially the ones where he goes through the history of someones house. I've done my family tree and wish I had the access to some of the records he has.
His programme Union does show that over time nothing every really changes.

I think you'll find the only "scots" who were keen were the nobility and landowners ...there were RIOTs on the city streets across the country .Just a few years later there were questions in parliament when we wanted the treaty revoked.
Have you never heard of the "parcel of rogues" who sold us down the river for their own selfish gain.
"UNION" has never been in the interest of the ordinary scot

Was one of those rogues the Duke of Cumberland? who sided with King George?
