Anyone watching it? It's had mixed reviews.

Clawdy Mon 04-Dec-23 08:19:59

With that ending, they are definitely hoping for a second series! I really hoped Chantrelle would get together with the lovely teddy boy.

karmalady Mon 04-Dec-23 07:33:03

There is a lot of reality and truth in that series, I remember snippets from my young days. Adversity brings a community together and miracles can happen when people pull together. Similar happened in my liverpool 5 area when I was young, people helped each other, all in the same boat of poverty.

Community was everything and it was lovely to see that community emerge and becoming stronger as one unit. I am looking forward to series 2

Not only miracles with the dilapidated church.

Also with the wedding dress, (eat your heart out, Scarlett O’Hara), the tables groaning with food, the posh wedding car (even if it had to be pushed), plus Shelton luckily having enough savings to cover the plane tickets. And everybody willing to dip their hands in their pockets to help, with hard cash as well as their free labour.

Only on Sunday night tv.

They did miracles with that dilapidated old church didn’t they? 🤣🤣

I was hoping Chanelle and the teddy boy would get together but it looks like she swings the other way, smooching with Siobhan. 😉

Wasn’t very impressed with Lenny Henry’s fake accent.

merlotgran Sun 03-Dec-23 21:15:30

I liked it and I’m glad it looks like there will be another series.
The characters took some getting used to but that often happens in a new drama.

Calendargirl Sun 03-Dec-23 19:54:18

Just watched the last episode on iPlayer.

Looks like it’s set for another series, but don’t think I shall tune in if so.

Haven’t warmed to any of the characters, and implausible plots.

Stick to the comedy Lenny.

I was surprised to see it had disappeared.

Probably not proved to be very popular, but with only two episodes to go, you would think it could be left to finish at usual time.

karmalady Sun 19-Nov-23 18:55:10

Primrose, I got settled too. What a disappointment, its not on

silverlining48 Sun 19-Nov-23 18:49:35

I remember the notices with no blacks no Irish no dogs prominent on windows of houses with rooms to let.
I found it shocking then. Still do.

Primrose53 Sun 19-Nov-23 18:38:15

Anybody know when Episode 3 is on ITV please? Just getting all settled to watch and it’s not in the listings.

merlotgran Sun 12-Nov-23 20:48:37

I quite like it. I hope the Beast of Boreham Wood gets his comeuppance.

Callistemon21 Sun 12-Nov-23 20:46:50

We're still recording it, will catch up soon 🙂

Calendargirl Sun 12-Nov-23 20:44:59

Anyone still watching this, week by week?

Am only sticking with it because not much else on.

Really can’t work up much interest into what happens to any of the characters, with implausible storylines, but after about four episodes, may as well hang on to the bitter end.

(And yes, I know I could switch it off).

Toetoe Mon 30-Oct-23 07:35:15

It was great , loved the music and funny . Loved the teeth sucking! I cried at the cruelty of racism . I remember when a teenager being told how disgusting it was to see a black man with a white woman or visa versa . It was a rare sight . Am sure there will be a second series .

Calendargirl Mon 30-Oct-23 07:06:56

Watched last night’s episode.

Found it all a bit OTT.

Would Hosanna have practically taken over the church service? Surely a ‘softly softly’ approach would have been better, the same at the new job, and in the pub.

Not gone in, all guns blazing.

As for the nanny one, where is the wife when hubby is creeping about at night, trying her door?

hmm

FindingNemo15 Sat 28-Oct-23 09:15:23

Willing to give it another go, but did find the accents hard to follow so had to put on the sub-titles.

* allsorts* yes conditions in factories in the 18/19th centuries were appalling but it wasn’t slavery. People were paid , albeit a pittance, and they weren’t forced into it on the basis of their skin colour, they weren’t owned by the factory owners and weren’t forced to take their names and speak a different language. During those times it was legal to kill a slave , so a white person could not be prosecuted for murdering or raping a black person. Slavery on an industrial scale did not happen on U.K. soil, as there were enough working class white people brought in from the land to do the hard graft. The BBC programme on black history is interesting and informative about the history of the slave trade.

NanaTuesday Sat 28-Oct-23 08:20:48

DrWatson ,my point exactly .A cave maybe !

NanaTuesday Sat 28-Oct-23 08:18:02

I cannot believe some of the comments on here “ I don’t know about The Windrush Ship” ?
Which ,is incredibly hard to believe for a start , do you live in a cave ? but just goes to show exactly the reasons behind the telling of “ Why , this story needs to be told and retold”

Anyone of the baby boomer generation will remember the notices on doors “ No Blacks,No Irish, No Dogs” .

Why shouldn’t it be told in this way on TV ?

Why ,wouldn’t there be a mixed race person ?

To me all of these comments are ludicrous.

We have lived through segregation in SA
In our life time African Americans were treated appalling .slavery was still a thing .

So again ,I say “ why shouldn’t it be told”

It is also one of those stories that should be told in schools .

I personally draw the line at the pulling down of statues etc ,it is history and you cannot change history ,but you can change peoples perceptions.
