DD1 text earlier to tell me Matthew Perry has died at 54.
She’d just finished his autobiography which I was going to borrow.
I’m sure a lot of us watched Friends, back in the day. RIP

Of course it’s all tragic. Addiction is awful and often the root causes are complex and have been in dealt with or unable to unravel

It was obvious to pretty much anyone with eyes that that was the case. I feel no sympathy for those charged, except his assistant, that makes me feel a little uncomfortable. Similar to Michael Jackson, very famous, very rich people are used to getting people to do what they want. I dont know, it's all tragic of course.

Norah Sat 17-Aug-24 18:10:20

I know, old thread.

This morning in NYT, several people have been charged by USA DOJ for wrong drug dealings during Matthew Perry's last days.

Apparently he'd not overcome his addiction.

Very sad. He seemed such a lovely man. I know he had his problems and was very open about it. He was great in Friends. RIP Matthew.

I agree, it's our British sense of decency. If we knew nothing or had never heard of someone we would just keep quiet. Many other countries just can't, what they say appears to our sensibilities as too in your face.

Matthew Perry was a talented actor entertaining many of us world wide and still doing so while Friends is repeated.
It’s continually being reported about his demons alcohol and drugs. His demons are what drove him to drugs and alcohol when he had fame and fortune. It’s sad because he had what most people can only dream of in life RIP.

Loved Friends. I believe Luke Perry was his brother. Both died young. RIP.

Same surname but not related Delene100

I also agree with Maw, although Friends was iconic and the six actors very high profile, if it wasn't on your radar fair enough, personally I wouldn't comment if unfamiliar with the person in question .Does seem a bit pointless given this is a thread specifically about his death, he was well liked by those of us who were fans of Friends.

DanniRae Tue 31-Oct-23 07:09:35

Yes indeed RosiesMaw I wonder that too? The majority of posters on this thread are expressing their sadness at the loss of Matthew Perry so what does it achieve to post that you have never watched "Friends" and have no idea who Chandler was?
Again "Why are you bothering to comment?"

RosiesMaw Mon 30-Oct-23 23:19:53

Never seen Friends
Don’t know the actor
Know nothing about him
Surprised by the coverage of his death
The vast majority agree (questionable)

Why are you bothering to comment?

TanaMa Mon 30-Oct-23 22:42:45

CrazyH - plenty of coverage of his problems and the sums of money spent on rehab. Even mentioned in other posts on this site.

TanaMa

Have never watched Friends and don't know this actor, however I find the amount of coverage of his death on radio, tv and other such media, strange considering the majority didn't even know the man himself. Obviously he was an addict, but why does that make him the subject of such coverage??

how mean of posters such as this one that post even though know nothing of the actor so wouldn't appreciate the coverage.

gransnet is flagging lately with interesting threads ,leading to people searching for anything to post on even though they know nothing of the 'subject person' as in this case.

How to miss the point on so many levels?

Sounds as though Matthew Perry had a troubled life, which is sad, but I’m afraid I’ve never found Friends funny. I just don’t get it! Our son and daughter both used to be fans, but it can’t be a generational thing if it’s popular on Gransnet. 🤔
The only American sitcom I’ve ever enjoyed watching was Home Improvement - brilliant comedy with Tim Allen. 😎

Tenko Mon 30-Oct-23 20:25:50

We’re a two generation friends watchers and I think we have the whole set of dvds . Chandler was one of my favourite friends and I was so sad to hear he had died . He had great comic timing and had most of the best one liners .
Interestingly you could track his drink and drug journey by his weight gain or loss during the decade of filming friends . RIP Mathew Perry

Friends is on channel 5 and you tube and I love it. It really is worth a watch for those that have never seen an episode.

Norah Mon 30-Oct-23 18:11:28

I've no idea who he was, until I read he died. Apparently he worked hard attempting to beat his addictions and help others, well done him.

Allsorts Mon 30-Oct-23 17:48:32

You have to feel sympathy for anyone who lives with demons that ultimately kill them, it’s very sad despite trying so hard he was unable to do so. He will be remembered as he wanted to, for all he did to try to cure himself and others. His legacy will live on. Rest in Peace Mathew, so many people cared very much for you.

I saw a small bit of a interview he did recently and he said that he would rather be known for his work with addiction and sobriety rather than Friends. Little did he know then RIP.

Doodledog

I didn’t often watch Friends, but having read the news and obituaries for MP, I am struck by the determination he must have had to fight his addictions. He was in and out of rehab - one of the stories I read said he had spent £9m on trying to get clean. When each one failed he tried again, and worked through - not only dealing with the disappointment of failure, but the addictions themselves, and the demons that caused them. That takes real strength of character. RIP.

Absolutely, Doodledog.

I m another who has not watched Friends, I unfortunately really don’t like American sitcoms so have never heard of this actor.
It’s always sad when anyone dies young as many ‘famous’ people like Amy Winehouses, Paula Yates robin williams (to name a few) do when they use a different lifestyle to make sense of their own lives
It sounds as if he’d had a troubled life in many ways, if his death was natural his lifestyle may have led to it
Sad

Yes. Same here.

I was so impressed by his complete honesty after reading Matthew Perry’s memoir ‘Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing’. Everything suddenly made sense and I was thrilled he’d survived such odds. Hearing of his tragic death has been such a shock - 54 is so young! Rest in peace dear Matthew. 🙏🏻

Luke and Matthew Perry were not brothers.
