Enjoyed it but so many characters! Wasn't sure who the body on the ground was at the very end. But think Tosh and Ashley J will be a good pairing.

am also liking it with ashley jensen, she's a fine actress, but do miss doug henshall, but many series survive when a long term lead leaves.I also can't understand why we have a new procurator fiscal, loved julie graham in that role.

To be honest I think it was to do with casting diversity. Can't have all white actors these days!

I liked her too in that role. Maybe she was busy elsewhere - she was just in the ITV drama Payback - and very good she was too!

Is the “procurator fiscal “ the man in the suit in the office?

Y.es we think so

Yes, I think he used to be Julie Graham iyswim!

I got confused with Phyllis Logan playing the matriarch. She played the same in Guilt which also starred Jamie Sives (DI Calder's ex).

Hellogirl1 Fri 17-Nov-23 22:10:38

The actor playing the Procurator Fiscal looks a lot like Vinnie Panesar in Eastenders.

I’ve really enjoyed Ashley Jensen in other programmes/series - Extras, Ugly Betty and Catastrophe in particular but don’t like her in this.
But not just her, I think a lot of the writing and acting in these three episodes has been very weak. Even stalwarts like Anne Louise Ross, Phyllis Logan and Jamie Sives all look like they phoned their performances in. As for Tosh, she can’t act her way out of the proverbial paper bag. The only change in her facial expression is how wide she opens her eyes.
The scenery is all that I’m enjoying. I spent a few days on Orkney earlier this year, loved it, hope to visit Shetland next.

BlueBelle Sat 18-Nov-23 08:03:15

Oh Granny I don’t agree with you at all about Tosh I think she’s doing fine and a likeable character and we saw her ‘lost’ husband and baby at last
I am finding it a bit difficult to follow though, as different names come up I’m thinking who’s that ? Just my brain getting old I guess

grannydarkhair Sat 18-Nov-23 15:24:35

Sorry BlueBelle but I think “Tosh” totally describes her acting 😁
And did anybody else recognise Lexie from Monarch of the Glen which I never watched any of when it was first shown. Dawn Steele is playing the murdered girl’s Mum. I binge watched MotG fairly recently, so instantly knew her face.

Calendargirl Sat 18-Nov-23 16:09:46

I agree about Tosh’s acting, grannydarkhair.

I didn’t recognise ‘Lexie’ straightaway, but did recognise her name in the cast, and then it was obvious. Just older.

‘Monarch Of The Glen’….. how time flies.

Richard Briers was awful in that, hopelessly miscast, nothing like a Scottish laird with his English accent.

AreWeThereYet Sat 18-Nov-23 16:55:52

Sorry, I have to disagree about Tosh's acting - she may not have excelled in this series (possibly because she hasn't had much acting to do?) although I actually like her character.

But we have just re-watched all the previous series of Shetland. In one series Tosh gets raped, and I have to say she brought tears to my eyes. I'm not a mawkish person, I don't normally cry over what I see on TV, sob stories don't get to me. But she did make me feel incredibly sad, not to mention quite sick, and I shed a few tears. I have seen the episodes before, and wasn't looking forward to them, so I suspect they affected me last time too.

grannydarkhair Sat 18-Nov-23 17:29:30

Calendargirl Actually, Richard Briers and Julian Fellowes as Kilwillie were the only two characters that I consistently enjoyed 😁 everybody else really irritated me at times, some more than others. Their accents made sense to me as they’d no doubt both been educated in English boarding schools from an early age.
AreWeThereYet I agree, she was reasonably good in that series, so maybe it’s due more to the poor script this time that’s not giving her a chance to actually act? (I’m trying to be charitable).

Sparklefizz Sat 18-Nov-23 18:17:06

You mention possibly a poor script grannydarkhair and I have thought the scripts for this new series are stilted and stumbling at times, and stating the bl***ing obvious, eg. "We need to find her". ... "Have we heard anything?" "Where is she?" etc.

Anyone else think this?

AreWeThereYet Sat 18-Nov-23 20:32:02

I've only watched the first two so far and I feel like I'm still waiting for it to really take off for some reason. Maybe my brain is still waiting for Dougie Henshall to appear. I'll re-watch the whole series once it's finished and see if it gets better once I'm more familiar with the characters. If not I doubt I'll watch it again.

Sparklefizz I agree about the script. It sort of reminds me of Inspector Montelbano, who had an assistant who was very slow on the uptake so everything had to be explained to him, which gave Inspector Montelbano the chance to explain his deductions to the viewers. Or Sherlock and Watson. Are they turning Tosh into Doctor Watson?

Atqui Sat 25-Nov-23 16:34:50

I’m getting confused between all the men !!!!

Judy54 Sat 25-Nov-23 16:36:30

I am getting confused with the whole thing, can't follow the plot or the characters!

NanKate Sat 25-Nov-23 16:42:36

I’m bored with Shetland, such a shame.

Juliet27 Sat 25-Nov-23 16:42:54

I prefer Ashley Jensen as ott Agatha Raisin

I am too..it's so slow and convoluted.. I much prefer the choice on Walter Presents..

Rosalyn69 Sun 26-Nov-23 14:49:57

I’m enjoying it - I think. I’m awfully muddled with the characters though.

Sparklefizz Thu 30-Nov-23 17:39:38

I am just not enjoying this new series. Either the acting is awful or it's the script. I'm sticking with it because I've been ill with a nasty virus for 2 weeks so I'm watching a lot of TV, but I'm feeling bored with it this time.

I used to love the scenery but what they're showing mostly in this series is the bleakness of Shetland. Not what I want when it's cold and dreary here.

Callistemon21 Thu 30-Nov-23 17:47:15

I'm just confused, Sparklefizz!

There are far too many characters, the plotline is confusing with too much backstory.

The minister looks so much younger than his sister, Ruth, that he must have been just a baby when she left home. Where's his wife, did she disappear?

Sparklefizz Thu 30-Nov-23 17:49:58

Where's his wife, did she disappear?

I think he said in last night's episode that she had gone away for a few days. She's given up on the programme too grin
