I started a thread yesterday about the film ‘Casablanca’.

It set me thinking, I love it but DH not really interested in ones like that.

So other films I consider more for ‘Women’. (And I do accept that some men like these films).

Casablanca.
Now Voyager.
Mildred Pierce.
All That Heaven Allows.
Brief Encounter.

And a bit more modern,

Dirty Dancing,
The Bridges Of Madison County.
Love Story.
Mayerling.

Lots more I’m sure, these just popped into mind.

The Bridges of Madison County - my all time favourite. Years ago my daughter and I were watching it and sobbing when my son came in, gave one look at us and said "Oh God" and ran up to his room to get away from it.

set me thinking. when my late (male) partner and i stayed in an out of the way place in wales.
it was a retired couple's modest bungalow, and they let a kind of small annex for B&B.
i seem to recall it was where there was or had been a training college for welsh presbyterian ministers, if anyone knows where that might be.
they were a v nice hospitable couple.
anyway, they provided some videos, and my partner was engrossed in the secret garden.
he thanked them at breakfast for this.
the husband said, oh i've got some others you might like, i'll leave them in the room.
when we got back we found several war and action type films, which neither of us cared for.
but we thanked him of course.
he seemed to think that a grown man would not choose to watch the secret garden.

Love Actually

We were watching it the other night and when it finished my DH said I'm going to watch a film now. I said we've just watched a film and the reply was yes but that's a film for women.

Orlin watches those shouty, car chase, shooting and punching films but can also enjoy Pretty Woman, Nottinghill, Love Actually, Top Gun. We’ve been known to share a box of tissues while watching Notebook.

I think it's more a question for some people of what is a good film. Casablanca has great acting and a fantastic script. The romance is incidental.
I don't like any of the 4 films you think of as "womens" with the possible exception of Mayerling.
I love films like The Shawshank Redemption and The Road to Perdition.
I recently watched the Death of Stalin for the second time. It's funny and clever. Romance doesn't figure highly in my assessment of films.

Last week I was talking to a friend I’ve known for a long time - her husband introduced DH and I - about the time they came to us for a weekend and we sat watching Love Story with we girls depleting a box of tissues while the men poked fun at us! We banished them to another room to play cribbage while we carried on crying!
Yes, Mayerling was another film that made me cry.
