Scratching around Christmas evening trying to find something to watch amongst the woeful offerings of old Morcambe and Wise shows, soaps, we don't follow any, or overly sentimental Call The Midwife. Found this gem of a film on I Player, Cyrano, a reworking of Cyrano de Bergerac, which several of us decided to watch and all agreed it was lovely. Wasn't sure I'd like it at first, musical version adapted from a stage play. However, really enjoyed it starring Peter Dinklage as Cyrano, he's very good, first time I'd seen him in anything not a GOT viewer.

Also on I Player is Kenneth Branagh's, Belfast, saw it a the cinema, many recommendations on GN at the time, well worth a watch for those who have never seen it.

Well I haven't watched a Carry On for some time but I love the fact they are on every Christmas in case I do want to watch them. Maybe older people will be happy to sit and watch them all day, as they are easy to follow and might take them back. So I hope they keep showing them. I'd never complain about something so harmless when there are so many horrible things on TV these days.

I hate the blooming Carryon Films! they are on every holiday never mind christmas. Why? Because they are not funny. We enjoyed watching Breaking Bad and my DVD’s of the Likely Lads.

Watching Fiddler On The Roof, BBC2 , one of my favourite films

JaneJudge Sat 30-Dec-23 10:28:24

I really liked the house of Gucci. Fantastic acting and styling. It put Nolly on straight after so I watched that too…

I think I’ll watch the courier today

I loved seeing him again in 2012 , A Song For Marion , with
Vanessa Redgrave

He’s aged beautifully!

Here you are Terribull Terence Stamp as a very old man sitting on a bench talking in detail about being Sgt Troy. Unless you want to remember him as that dashing young man.

Just watched Belfast again and enjoyed it as much as when I saw it at the cinema, forgot about the great Van Morrison soundtrack. Another good film from a few years ago, Bridge of Spies I see is also on IPlayer. Couldn't resist watching Some Like it Hot for the umpteenth time on Boxing Day such a great classic.

Hope you enjoy House of Gucci Judge Jane I thought it was very good when I saw it on Prime.

Another fan of Far From The Madding Crowd I enjoyed the Carey Mulligan version, maybe not as much as the earlier one with Julie Christie, probably because Terrance Stamp will always be the definitive Troy.

I really liked the last bus, even though it was sad. I’m about to put on the house of Gucci

Glorianny Fri 29-Dec-23 17:54:43

I watched The Last Bus and loved it.
If you like black humour watch "The Death of Stalin" Armando Iannucci's take on what happened when Stalin died. Some of it is a bit gruesome but it is very funny.

I watched The Last Bus yesterday on BBC iplayer, starring Timothy Spall I really enjoyed it, although at times it was sad. I recommended it to my daughter, she watched it last night, she put on her Facebook page today, "what a lovely sad film, cheers mum for the recommendation although I'm sobbing now". Trying to get eldest daughter to watch it too, but not sure if she will.

For those who like ballet, Matthew Bourne's "Sleeping Beauty" was shown on Christmas Day. A great production with some brilliant dancing. It doesn't exactly follow the story that I learned when young but so what?

Some like it hot is still an amazing film I could never get bored with it. Goodnight Mr Tom takes me back years my son and I were walking the dog one evening. He mentioned the book he was reading in English literature. We decided to buy the dvd for his birthday and it’s been watched many times since. I cried again watching it on tv the other day acting at it’s best.

Does anyone watch the Carry On films??? They seem to be on every Christmas!!

I loved Carry On Screaming!

Have read it now. Not sure how I missed the series.I’d really like to see it. To me, nothing beats the most recent tv adaptation of Tess if the d’Urbevilles although I still think Eddie Redmayne was mis cast appearance wise ( I didn’t realise at the time what a good actor he was: I was talking about it with my daughter at Christmas….).

I'm not sure where you can see the 1998 series apart from on DVD which I bought:
Far From the Madding Crowd series
I was madly in love with Terence Stamp and adored Alan Bates as Gabriel Oak, so have always loved the 1967 film, but have to admit the series was actually better. The 2015 version was my least favourite.

To be honest I think the 1990s was the golden age of period drama. They made some wonderful Dickens, Hardy, Gaskell, DH Lawrence, Bronte, Austin dramas back then, and today's offerings just can't compare with them.

Tonight I found a film on I player, Red Dust. I've never heard of this film before but it is an incredible watch. About Apartheid in South Africa, I feel like I have not really ever known what it was really like.

Enjoyed watching Kin on BBC iplayer made a change from repeats

I persuaded DH to watch Belfast directed by Kenneth Branagh this afternoon. I saw it at the cinema and loved it but he didn't fancy it.Well he thoroughly enjoyed it and I loved it even more.

For Hardy fans here we have an interesting comparison of the three versions of ^Far From the Madding Crowd^:
1967 - Julie Christie
1998 - Paloma Baeza with Nathaniel Parker as Oak (3hrs 21mins)
2015 - Carey Mulligan
comparison of the three versions

That seemed to come up with the wrong link. Here is the correct one:

I haven’t looked at the link yet ( I will) but I watched the Carey Mulligan version the other night. I haven’t watched it for a while but had seen it at the cinema and bought the dvd. I thought it was a good adaptation except for the fact that Captain Troy was so badly mis cast. Then again how can anyone follow Terence Stamp in that role. I didn’t think Matthias was right for the role of Gabriel at the time but have seen him in other films since and am rather in love with him so my opinion has changed! The Julie Christie film looks so dated mainly because, for some reason the women in films at that time had such garish make up ( Women in Love being an exception). I don’t think I’ve seen the 1998 version.

Kenneth Branagh's Belfast was superb. Best thing we watched over the Christmas. It had a real poignancy to it and what a great actor Jude Hill is.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 28-Dec-23 16:34:21

Peter Dinklage was in a lovely film called The Station Agent a few years back. Watch it if it comes round again.

albertina Thu 28-Dec-23 16:05:05

I watched the Morecambe and Wise show with Andre Previn and laughed as much as I did 50 years ago, but I agree there were far too many old programmes on.
