I think IKWYM, Greyduster. As I grow older I find it almost impossible to watch scenes of cruelty and violence, even if it is a relevant part of the story.

Gosh I remember the original series being full of hair raising cruelty. Goodness knows how graphic the new one will be!

Loved the original series, will look forward to watching this series.

The Shogun series in the 80's was unmissable. I adored Richard Chamberlain ever since he was Dr Kildare.

I always thought he never achieved the dizzy heights of fame he seemingly deserved. He was wonderfully good looking and an excellent actor.

Shogun the book is one of my all time favourites that I re-read every few years. But I can’t say I really enjoyed the series with Richard Chamberlain, I just thought he was wrong for the part of Blackthorne. Maybe because I always thought of him as Dr Kildare.

Richard Chamberlain and Rock Hudson always played very handsome alpha males, and then turned out to be gay!

I loved the original version, so might be disappointed with the new one. Also, I am too mean for fork out for extra viewing channels. I remember Terry Wogan's funny comments on it in his radio programme all those years ago which amused me on my drive to work.

I also enjoyed Thorn Birds with Richard Chamberlain, I thought him very good looking.

Thanks Grannmarie, not sure I know how to do that but I can maybe ask someone.

Hello 👋 Chestnut! I might be wrong but I think you can watch the original series on IMDB if you download the app ?
When I googled Shogun the IMDB page came up with the five original episodes. 🤞

I remember the book, Canadiangran, it certainly was a doorstopper!

Thanks for the info, Grannmarie! I looked up and watched the trailer for the new series and will definitely put it on my list to watch.

I will also try to get the book and re-read it, to refresh my mind with the plot. It was a very thick book if I remember correctly.

One Shogun is enough for me, with the gorgeous Richard Chamberlain, what more could you want? Also, I'm not keen on the way things are made these days, very dark, lots of violence and gore, and far too much CGI which always looks unreal. I would love to watch the RC version but can only see it on DVD for £34.99 (5 disks, 10 hours).

Thanks for the link and trailer, TinSoldier.

sassenach152, I think IKWYM. I haven't subscribed to Disney+ yet, but I might be tempted, just to see this.

I'd love to see it, as the Richard Chamberlain version was so good but I'm not prepared to subscribe to Disney+ or Hulu to watch it, I already pay for Netflix and Prime. Such a pity it couldn't have been on mainstream tv

Coming to Disney on 27 February 2024 - which is great as I treated myself to a subscription for Christmas.

Stars Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Toranaga and Cosmo Jarvis as Pilot John Blackthorne.

I've just seen that a new version of the fabulous Shogun story ( by James Clavell) is being released soon on Hulu and Disney +.

I loved the 1980s mini series with my idol, Richard Chamberlain. I wonder if this new version will be just as good?

I've added a screenshot, sorry I can't do links. I'm sure some helpful person will add one soon.
