Anyone remember it?
Tipped for the lead role is Aidan Turner, with David Tennant and James Norton also in the running.

I like DT in anything but I’d prefer JN as Bergerac. In the absence of John Nettles of course …

I think that Tom Chambers is a bit too clean cut, Bergerac was always a bit wayward. Not David Tennant or Toby Jones either, I could never fancy either of them.
James Norton or Aidan Turner for me, just a bit rumpled and unshaven. Or Idris Elba...

Great idea, loved Bergerac.

Fell in love with Jersey watching Bergerac years ago. Son No2 now lives here so I get to visit every other month and am here now for 2 weeks, am so so lucky.

Will Mellor please.
Loved John Nettles in the role

The car used to belong to William Alwyn, British composer. He lent it for the pilot and as the series took off it became Begerac's car. My husband was watching Begerac with his aunt one day when she said, "That's my car!" He said, "No, it's Begerac's car." She then told him the story. William used to pick her up in the car after her harmony lessons when they were courting. Obviously it held fond memories for Doreen. I wonder what car the new Begerac will have?

Obviously a 'Grandson' to take the reins so the title name could continue?

I rather fancy Will Mellor in the role. (Actually, I DO, rather fancy Will Mellor.
Full stop !!).

His appearances in 'Mr Bates v. the Post Office' and 'Corrie' show what a versatile actor he is.

I also think he'd make a fine lead in 'Death in Paradise' should Ralf Little decide to move on (although I hope he doesn't).

Also Will Mellor might be happy to commit to the long haul whereas the others will want to skedaddle after a series or two.

The important thing is NOT to make it too dark; keep a modicum of humour;
and also keep the family situation at the forefront.

Looking forward to it.

Loved Bergerac.
James Norton for me, I was gutted when he left Grantchester or is it Granchester?

Great minds. I've also just suggested him! A versatile actor and SO easy on the eye!!

Did you see him on 'Would I lie to you?' last week? Great fun.

Annette Badland has a non stop career in the 40-years since Bergerac. Television and films - most of which you would know of. And radio.
Look on Wiki or IMDb to learn more.

Another good idea. Are you reading this BBC Bristol?

I can't get past Tommy in Happy Valley 🤯

I'm soo jealous, and of you too grandMattie. Such a beautiful island. I used to catch the first Condor boat over from France every week and spend the day exploring before my onward flight to work.
I feel a (GN) trip coming on. Anyone?!

Great that they are bringing back Bergerac.John Nettles is hard to replace. But wouldn’t it be nice to have an unknown actor in the leading role. There seems to be a group of actors who are in everything- give someone else a break for a change!

Labadi0747 Wed 06-Mar-24 13:35:22

James Norton 👍

Mojack26 Wed 06-Mar-24 14:02:04

Agree

Aveline Wed 06-Mar-24 14:06:42

They're bound to bring in a coloured actor these days.

HiPpyChick57 Wed 06-Mar-24 14:12:26

Aw he was properly a bad boy in that, but that proves how versatile an actor he is when he can make you hate him in one series and love him in the next.

HiPpyChick57 Wed 06-Mar-24 14:14:31

That last post should have been quoted into callistemon21 post about James Norton being in happy valley. Don’t know what happened there 🤷🏼‍♀️

I certainly recall Bergerac, it gets repeated sometimes on one of the many channels that show repeats! And as somebody mentioned Shoestring, yes, there are many shows from that sort of era that could be revived, Softly Softly, Sweeney (maybe not a good idea given the problems the Met has?!), Cribb, Gentle Touch, Between the Lines, Juliet Bravo, Hazell, Van der Valk and more.

But Bergerac has those pretty Jersey locations, and the tourist board might help pay for the show?! As for who would be Bergerac 2, lots of actors could do it, if the writing is good. And as I see one cynic said (beating me to it), given today's need to 'tick boxes', would it be a great surprise if the new lead was an Asian woman, a single mum with a handicapped dad to look after (etc etc . . .)??

Valels Wed 06-Mar-24 14:58:14

Having just finished watch the entire Bergerac series m. I'd love to see an up to date version. Wonder who would be Charlie?!

Labradora Wed 06-Mar-24 15:01:04

Shoestring comeback!!
Genius idea.

James Norton as Bergerac
David Tennant as Shoestring- David can do "scruffy"
What can we put Cillian Murphy in ?
All these men are lovely but Cillian is just about too handsome for anything.smile

Saw John Nettles playing Hamlet in a university production in the sixties. ( My DB was in the same play playing a minor character). Saw him about ten years ago in the same play as Claudius. He was leaping around the stage like a youngster.

I see him as a Bond..

Joseann Wed 06-Mar-24 16:11:27

Didn't John Nettles appear in Poldark as someone's father or uncle? Maybe Aidan Turner asked him to to put in a good word should the Bergerac rôle come up for grabs!
