Big Brother Anyone

I have never watched BB but tonight there was nothing else on TV so I put it on at the point where they were doing meditation or something in their yoga pants.

One by one they all started crying and my husband said “for God’s SAKE switch this rubbish off.” I agreed so we found something we had recorded to watch.

Just in those 5 minutes I noted a very haggard Sharon Osborne, very haggard indeed. Craigy from Corrie, Fern who gets on everything that will have her, a confused looking Louis and Uncle Gary. I don’t think I knew anybody else.

Worse than watching paint dry. 😝

I don't like any of these programmes (eg I'm a Celebrity Get me out of here, Love Island, etc) that seem to relish putting people in uncomfortable/confrontational/humiliating situations, just to watch their reactions.

Years ago there was a screen play (I believe written by Dennis Potter) called The Year of the Sex Olympics. I think I must have been about 12 at the time but I can remember feeling horrified at what it portrayed - a TV audience avidly watching, and laughing at, ever-escalating violence and cruelty.

It took a suicide to get the Jeremy Kyle Show taken off air but these are watered down versions that have the same sort of aims and methodology.

I saw The Year of the Sex Olympics too. It was first aired in 1968 on BBC2. I was 11 at the time so I assume this was before Mary Whitehouse had an impact.

It eerily predicted a future of reality TV and a populous completely hooked on media through which a hierarchy subdued and thus controlled them. Society, in this future scape, had been divided into "high drives" and "low drives". The high drives obviously being the elite in control.

The low drives were fed a diet, via TV, of pornography and reality TV which absorbed them to such an extent that they lacked any ambition other than to work for the high drives and were oblivious to the world around them.

Language had become almost redundant because social interaction had been reduced to nothing more than basic necessities. There was no need for conversation or reading books as everything was streamed through the TV.

Chilling, no?

It's on a strange channel 4. I often can't find it but when I do I record the series and skim through later.

I don’t watch a lot of television Cressida but I do enjoy factual programmes (especially historical ones) and a good quality drama, of which there are few nowadays (we don’t subscribe to Netflix etc). And, every day, BBC news. Maybe it’s the lawyer in me, preferring fact to fantasy. I watched Coronation Street years ago, from the first episode, but stopped when it became less ‘a story of everyday Northern folk’ and more an unbelievable fantasy. I just don’t see the appeal in reality tv programmes - but each to their own. I would rather read a good book.

My other friends do, but I have limited watching TV as my partner is a big sports fan so we share viewing. Is it good?

Frankly, I don't give a damn, but I struggle to understand who anyone wants to categorise people based on what they watch on TV . It's such an arbitrary measure, and such a peculiar thing to do.

In my own case it is absolutely true.

I guess, Doodledog, some of us simply can’t identify the person who watches this kind of programme (and soaps such as Corrie) with the one who makes intelligent comments and cogent arguments on GN. To be blasphemous, it ‘passeth all understanding’.

I can't stop looking at Sharon and wondering what happened to the healthy looking Mrs O. Louis is the biggest diva in there.

I’m finding Sharon and Louis an unpleasant pair. The more I see and hear the less I like them. I like Fern and I hope she lasts the course.

I've just caught up with tonight's episode, and enjoyed it. I won't miss Lauren, and think she will go, as Gary is (marginally) more interesting.

I was surprised to see Fern getting a few votes, but of course the housemates are predominantly younger, so will see her as old and therefore boring, whereas I don't .

Louis is really quite unpleasant, isn't he? Also, I thought it was interesting that he seems to value the housemates based on a hierarchy of their fame. I agree that he brings value to the entertainment though.

I think Bradley wrote a book about an autistic boy, which has been serialised or made into a film. He said something to that effect tonight. I also think (but am not sure) that he may have starred in the film/show.

I'm not sure about Zeze either. Is she an influencer?

Colson is coming over well, IMO. He is very natural and unassuming. I just wish I didn't see Shrek every time I look at him, bless him.

Ekin-Su is very precious, I think. I'm not a fan at this stage.

Yes the cracks are beginning to appear . I’m not keen on Lauren and wasn’t disappointed to see her chosen. Even if she survives the public vote I think she’ll be argumentative. Especially with Louis and Sharon stirring the pot and egging her on. I felt sorry for Colson when Ekin was so abrupt with him. The poor guy was just making conversation.

Interesting programne tonight. I think they picked the right one for nomination, and the house is now dividing into groups.
I think Ekinsu and Zeze will really kick off.
I am glad Louis is still there,he loves stirring the pot and makes things interesting.

I too love Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother and will be watching every night.
