Did anyone watch this last night. Disturbing content and I felt so very sad for her but thoroughly enjoyed it. Based on a true story.

There have been at least three of these cases to come to the general public's attention - Fritzel's daughter was just the first to be discovered.

I found it difficult at the time to believe the Frau Fritzel had had no idea what was going on - but then I never believe any woman who says she had no idea her husband was abusing their children. How ccould you not know?

yes watched it and it reminded me of a film called ROOM, girl locked in a shed and gave birth to a baby, so shocking when these docu-dramas are based on real stories

Icouldn't watch this - the true events were too harrowing. Below is cut and pasted:
In a case that hit headlines in 2008, it was uncovered that Josef Fritzl had kept his daughter Elisabeth locked up in a cellar for 24 years in Austria. He had raped her repeatedly and fathered seven children with her, leaving her to give birth without medical intervention or support, according to BBC reports. One of her babies had died.

I intend to watch it later today.

I find most things "based on a true story" ultimately unsatisfactory. The "storyteller" is always hampered by the facts.

And in this case it isso recent that the people involved are still alive. I wouldn't want to watch it.

I have occasionally watched something like this but it only seems to work for me if it's a story we know little about because it's shrouded in the mists of time and then it has the freedom to go way "off piste". If it's more modern I'd always opt for a documentary.

It was on Channel 5.

Is it on Netflix? I am interested in watching it although it does sound rather disturbing.

Saw it for a few seconds when changing channels, realised what it was, and shifted to something else.

There's plenty gloom and misery in the world as it is, without being reminded in such a 'drama' of just how despicable some humans are. I honestly don't see the point of making a show like this, the story got a a massive amount of TV and press coverage at the time.

I watched it and found it truly shocking to watch and find out it happened for real 😞 lock him up and throw away the key that's what I say because it's basically what he did to her and 'their' poor children

Hi i didn’t watch it last night but Ive seen it. I found it very powerful had me crying at the part when she was in the hospital when she asked for help I was running with her lol. I believe it was a true story think I watched it on amazon when it first came on there. But what she went threw off her father and her poor mum looking for her heartbreaking

EMMYPEMMY Sat 23-Mar-24 13:45:44

It's true life though happens all over the world

Knittypamela Sat 23-Mar-24 12:36:19

It would trigger claustrophobia so not watching

hilz Sat 23-Mar-24 12:12:30

I did watch it and it was harrowing knowing it was based on a true story. Sadly abuse has many forms and is not be as rare as we would like to think.

grannybuy Sat 23-Mar-24 11:32:42

I watched it. A shocking situation. I hope the daughter and her children managed to have a decent life after the trauma they suffered.

Jewelle Sat 23-Mar-24 11:21:51

Nope, not for me. I just can’t understand how you can “thoroughly enjoy..” something with this awful subject matter.

polnan Sat 23-Mar-24 11:17:19

I wouldn`t watch this,, being claustrophobic, even reading this... is not good.. (shaking head) I am fed up with all the doom and gloom, and murders and horrible stuff on tv!

TanaMa Sat 23-Mar-24 11:10:05

Prison was too good for the 'father' on whom this story was based. Would have locked him in a cellar!

Buttonjugs Sat 23-Mar-24 11:08:35

No, I couldn’t watch it. I can cope with true crime documentaries where facts are reported but not fictional acting because it seems so real. I can’t cope with witnessing abuse.

Purplepixie Thu 21-Mar-24 10:53:24

I just couldn’t watch it. What kind of human being does that to another person never mind the fact that it was his own daughter. Too terrible to even think about.

henetha Thu 21-Mar-24 10:51:18

I recorded it and might watch it sometime, possibly. Or maybe not. It sounds unpleasant.

Taylor2016 Thu 21-Mar-24 10:21:08

Thanks Poppyred.
Harrowing and felt butterflies in my tummy all the way through.

MayBee70 Wed 20-Mar-24 21:57:43

I did watch Room a few years ago which was a fictional account based on the same theme ( I did think it was based on a true story but, on googling it my memory must be wrong). I found it surprisingly watchable because the acting was very good.

BlueBelle Wed 20-Mar-24 19:54:31

I believe she had 6 or 7 babies by him

Shinamae Wed 20-Mar-24 19:51:45

I have read a book about it, and it is very harrowing..

Shinamae Wed 20-Mar-24 19:51:18

Shinamae

Where was it on?
