Has anyone noticed this showing on BBC4 but also on iPlayer?
It's absolutely amazing, the writing is far better than anything we see nowadays. And the actors are A list!
We have young Sarah Lancashire and Siobhan Finneran (long before Happy Valley), John Simm, Christopher Eccleston, Philip Glenister, Lesley Sharp (those are the one I know but there are others). And that's just the first three episodes.
Quote: The series was highly acclaimed by the critics, winning the British Academy Television Award for Best Drama Series in 2001. The BBC said the programme was axed following declining ratings, but creator Abbott said the programme's demise was down to "a lack of writers able to come up with stories good enough to carry the stand alone episodes."
So there you have it, not enough good writers. What has happened?
There are 4 series and 27 episodes so I hope they show them all. I don't know how I missed this when it was on. I really am blown away and suggest you try the first one with John Simm.

UKTV Play is free but you have to register. It's worth it though. There are thousands of good things to watch and there is no risk. I've been registered for a few years but not had any problems and there's no need to login each time. It's not a subscription because it's all free.
Oops, sorry. It's on BBC iPlayer! Yes that is also free but you have to register for all of them.

Chestnut have just watched no. 6 Catherine and Mac’s story.
Who was the older woman with blonde hair? She appeared to be trying to burn the factory down at the end but it didn’t work. Didn’t understand that at all. Thanks.Didn’t she run the newspaper kiosk where the factory workers bought their papers? She thought there was no point going on, as the factory had closed, but then she saw the lorries returning?
I've watched Ep6 now and LucyAnna is correct. She wasn't burning the factory down. She was just about to burn her shop down when the lorries returned. What an amazing episode, and some serious logistics involved there, what with the removal of all that machinery etc. We never see anything that good nowadays.
I love the way they have taken all the staff at the factory and woven an interesting story around each one, with people also appearing in each other's stories. It's so clever and so original.
And the acting A List is incredible! I just hope the stories are as good in series 2-4 which we haven't seen yet.
The quality of this just makes today's drama offerings look very poor in comparison.
I am hooked on clocking off now, very well written and acting is great.
I was telling DS how much I enjoyed it and he told me that the writer of the series Paul Abbott had been married to DIL's aunt in the 1980s.

Sorry, I'm watching at TV pace and have just recorded 3-6 last night. I won't be watching No 6 for a few days yet so will have to get back to you. It's Katherine and Mack's story according to Wiki. Maybe someone else will know.

BBC1 have shown some great Aussie drama series in the afternoons, like Five Bedrooms and The Heights. But imo A Place to Call Home was the best series ever made. I have the entire series on DVD and will watch again one day.
Trust me!! 🤣🤣. I did, of course, mean A Place To Call Home!!
I caught one episode one wet afternoon when I was ironing. That is the only time I watch TV in the day. It must have been meant to be because I was hooked and recorded it every day to watch at night.
Never seen the other progs you mentioned though.
Thank you for telling me this is on. I remember it fondly from years ago and will watch it again. A great show.
I loved Clocking Off. Thank you for telling us Chestnut. It will inspire me to work out how I view iplayer on my new-ish Sky box!!
I’m also watching these episodes now…thanks for posting about it. They are so good.
We're watching these. They're brilliant. Nice to see a lot of actors we 'know' in their early days. The one we watched tonight had David and Sarah from Coronation Street when they were children.

This is Moving On.

I agree episode 3 was disturbing, involving a manipulative woman and a young man with learning disabilities. But I find the endless murders, serial killers and violence in most of today's dramas are worse.
So far the stories are all very original and do not seem to have any ridiculous storylines or holes in the plots. Also no murders so it's all such a refreshing change. 😍
Exactly Chestnut. 👍
About 5 or 6 years ago there was a series on BBC early afternoon which I used to record and watch in the evenings. That was a series of plays and I think may have been called Moving On or similar. Better than anything that was ever on in the evenings.
One of the best series I ever watched was No Place Like Home which was an Australian saga with fabulous scenery, clothes and actors. Set in the 50s. I never watch TV in the day but it’s always worth checking the TV guide for stuff to record and watch later. Why they never put that on at night is beyond me.
I remember Clocking Off as well. An excellent series unlike a lot of the claptrap shown now. Brilliant casting too.

This must have passed me by 24 years ago. In what way is it disturbing Primrose?
I watched episodes 2 and 3 but found 3 quite disturbing. Good acting but disturbing.
Thank you Chestnut We watched the first episode this evening. Great cast and I don't ever remember seeing the program when first broadcast.
Thank you so much for posting Chestnut i have just watched the first one. Remember these from years ago.
