Baby Reindeer - anyone watched it?

Just wondered if anyone else had watched Baby Reindeer on Netflix? We decided to give it a go - hadn't seen or heard anything about it, and I have to say it's a very powerful and moving piece of television, although not an easy watch. Deserves all the awards...

NotSpaghetti Sat 04-May-24 12:23:29

Iam64 no. Have watched 3 episodes.
I'm OK with gritty and troubling but not engaged enough to watch any more.

He apparently took the stage version to the Fringe. I'd rather have seen it as a play.

Now I know it's "based on fact" it feels gratuitous to be honest. Two needy and damaged people...
Was going to watch another couple of episodes last night but neither of us wanted to.

Big discussion at work (with opinions from a range of ages). We could all understand how Donny kept on going back to his abuser/s but to have been raped and then re-enacted that rape for a TV camera, not one of the 7 of us found this plausible. We also agreed that had this been a female writer/ actor there would have been less sympathy and fewer plaudits with her credibility being questioned.
Gadd has asked that people stop trying to identify the people he wrote about but why did he bring it to a wider audience if that wasn’t his intention? Catharsis maybe, but isn’t this series way over the top? Not sure that I believe this is totally true.

I beg to differ about how it would have been seen differently if it was been a female writer. Michaela Coel's I May Destroy You is similar in some respects and was very criticially acclaimed.

Exactly MissI.
Notspaghetti - I’m not sure from your comment that you watched it all. The Edinburgh Fringe show along with Gadd’s on stage breakdown are in the later episodes.

Interesting interview MissInterpreted. I’m sure Clerkenwell’s legal team were all over this , well aware the two alleged abusers were easily identified.

Yes, I would have thought they would have been over every aspect of it with a fine-tooth comb before anything went into production.

Yes watched it all in a day … Absolutely loved it

NotSpaghetti Sat 04-May-24 09:15:57

Well, so much for me thinking it would be better as a stage play. My husband has read that it was a play first, created by Gadd for the Edinburgh Fringe and then taken up a few years later by Clerkenwell Films (which is owned outright by the BBC). Personally I think it would be better on stage.

We have had enough. Not sufficiently gripping - and why didn't Clerkenwell check that the characters were not so easily traceable back to real life?

The real 'Martha' has given an interview to the Daily Record, and she's not a happy bunny...

I thought it brilliant and food for thought. The sentence ‘I realised I let people abuse me me because my self loathing was deeper than my love for them’.
Resonated with me
He is a brave man.

We have watched 6 episodes so far and episode 4 did go some way to explain Donny’s response (or lack of), but it was very grim.

There is only 1 episode left to watch and I am not certain I will, as each evening I keep putting it off.

NotSpaghetti Fri 03-May-24 01:43:41

I'm only just up to episode 4 (haven't seen it yet) - but I find it all rather obvious and think it's "held back" by being based on a true story - or rather, real events.

I can't really like anyone in it so far - Teri is the most interesting in some ways. It's all rather frustrating and not as scary as it should be. I have helped someone through stalking and feel he should have gone to the police - after all he has plenty of "evidence". Even a needy person can see it's a police matter.
It feels like an adaptation of a stage play - where actually it may "play" better.

If episode 4 isn't an improvement I will forget the rest.

I am deeply disappointed that it's based on real life stories - I hadn't read anything about it and likely wouldn't have started to watch if I'd known. I feel very sad that some people are able to identify characters in it. That feels like revenge.
😟

I wonder how those have been the stalkers viewed that experience and representation?

Barbadosbelle Thu 02-May-24 20:23:16

..

My chaps are rewatching ‘The Onedin Line’ on the television through YouTube. Cinematography wasn’t as sharp then as now, but they’re enjoying it.

There are 7 episodes. Gadd was ‘confused’ about his sexuality and I suspect that’s one of the reasons he returned to the predatory man.
I’ll say no more till you’ve watched all of them Labradora

Labradora Thu 02-May-24 17:58:26

We've watched this including Episode 5 (there are 6 , I think).
Probably we'll watch the final one. Gadd's sexual issues seem to have been provoked by the abusive director/producer as much as by anything else. I kept wanting to shout Nooooo..... also particularly when he returned relentlessly to this man's clutches. Gadd didn't seem to know that he was undergoing a manifestation of the "casting couch". He never got the "job" though.
What a shame he didn't give Martha's name to the police straightaway. They couldn't fail to act once they got it because of her criminal history.

Namsnanny Thu 02-May-24 14:55:54

I hope so too for your sake crazyH
I suppose you can understand the reasons she calls on you, and you seem to be able to take it in your stride, thankfully.
Sorry you had such a bad experience Mirren.

It must make you wary of people now?

crazyH Thu 02-May-24 14:48:54

How awful for you Mirren. Hope she has backed off a bit. I don’t have a stalker as such, but one of my neighbours, widowed, no children, has sisters and nieces, only in name, comes here almost every day. She is 84, repeats the same story. Does not watch much TV, (has eye problems) or general news. We have nothing to discuss because she is oblivious to what’s happening in the world. Has pub lunches most days. She is desperate for company. I struggle to keep a conversation going . She does like the men though😂 - B is desperate to sleep with her, so she says. Looks good for her age - soon will be 85. I hope she and B will make a go of it. Then I can relax 😂

Mirren Thu 02-May-24 14:18:29

I am watching it and find it really hard viewing....because I have had a similar experience.
My " stalker " ...
Who actually looks like Martha, is female, so the sexual assault and that side of the story don't apply.
However, the rest does.
I met her at a knitting group, felt sorry for her because others were being rude about her.... this rapidly escalated to constant messages, demanding meet up and coffee, love bombing with gifts she couldn't afford..
If I sent a FB message she knew and would pop up online.
She commented on how long I was on FB each night.
She lives round the corner and everytime I went out my door she was there.
She joined my church, got herself invited to my home group.
She then started demanding lifts everywhere, borrowing money....and told my children she was " my very close friend ".
It was awful.
It made me ill.
I tried to be patient, kind and nice but, eventually 2 things made me " ghost " her....
1) she started making snide remarks about my husband
2) my daughter found a breast lump ( thankfully not cancer) but this woman did not care. All she did was moan about going for her Pip assessment.
She created an unpleasant fuss within the church about how I was ignoring her and bombarded me with messages about how her GP had had to prescribe valium because she was so upset.....
So , Baby Reindeer has been very close to the bone to watch.

meddijess Thu 02-May-24 14:14:34

Didn't fancy watching it. We're glued to For All Mankind - love anything with space travel. If I ever win the lottery, I'll be the oldest woman to go into space! And the programme's star is Joel Kinnaman - just love him. My daughter got me a signed photo of him for my 78th birthday!

nanna8 Thu 02-May-24 14:11:58

Cultural thing - I couldn’t relate to the people at all. I am sure others would, though.

Namsnanny Thu 02-May-24 14:06:48

I was afraid to watch it nanna8 in case it was a bit grueling. But if you were bored....?

nanna8 Thu 02-May-24 14:04:48

I watched the first episode but got bored with it. Maybe I’ll give it another go.

Urmstongran Thu 02-May-24 13:09:49

He was nicknamed ‘baby reindeer’ not because of his looks but because he reminded Martha how safe she felt when a young girl - living in a violent household - with her favourite soft toy to cuddle when she was frightened. Heartbreaking.

Macgran43 Thu 02-May-24 13:02:05

Yes I watched it. Very gripping and thought the main male character did look like a baby reindeer. Terrific acting.
