madeleine. As I said above it has been shown this week/last week on BBC4. You can probably get it on catch-up.

he was wonderful in Boys from the Blackstuff and a very good actor in a variety bits. Yosser was very well remembered and it would be good if it was played again

They've been repeating Boys from the Blackstuff over the last couple of weeks on BBC4. I didn't realise it was on and just managed to catch two episodes. Last night we watched Yosser's Story. It is still absolutely heartbreaking. Bernard Hill's acting was incredible. We'll find the episodes we missed in catch up.

He was the only actor to appear in the only two movies which received 11 Oscars.
Titanic and Lord of the Rings.

Urmstongran

And I’ve just remembered …. He was the husband of Shirley Valentine!
“You’re not going to no Greece”.
Classic film.

...and the captain of the Titanic.

Still had it last night as Martin Freeman's horrible Dad in the Responder. RIP

BFTBS Very gritty and brought home the despair of being unemployed in the early 1980s.

“Gizza a job. I can do that. Gizza a job”.
Heartbreaking stuff in its day.
RIP Mr Hill - and thanks for the memories.

He was brilliant as Yosser. What a wonderful series that was.

Callistemon21 Sun 05-May-24 19:52:05

He also played the ship's captain in Titanic

RIP Bernard Hill

I've never seen Boys from the Blackstuff. I remember him from Lord of the Rings and Wolf Hall. RIP.

So sad and yes Yosser is how I remember him too. Even sadder that his return to the small screen in Responder is scheduled tonight.

RIP, Bernard, I always think of Yosser too.

I'm Yosser Hughes. Boys from the Blackstuff - in my opinion one of the best TV series ever. RIP Bernard.

His portrayal of a man in the throws of mental illness because of despair will never leave me.

As per title, BH has died. I will always think of him as Yosser Hughes in Boys from the Blackstuff even though he has portrayed many other characters since.
