In 1956, Around the World in 80 Days, Cantinflas' American debut, earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a musical or comedy. Variety magazine said in 1956 that his Chaplinesque quality made a big contribution to the success of the film. The film ultimately made an unadjusted $42 million at the box office. While David Niven was billed as the lead in English-speaking nations, Cantinflas was billed as the lead elsewhere. As a result of the film, Cantinflas became the world's highest-paid actor

I love the scooping snow off the mountain for the champagne. I think it is genius. I am still watching sporadically as Mr. Macadia is snoring in his chair and I am making curry. I just watched a part where someone said, drink this whiskey and then the train can get over the river!

I saw it when it was released, and enjoyed it enormously. I have caught glimpses of it on tv since, and would like to see it in its entirety again. Scenes I remember best: scooping snow off the mountain top to cool the champagne when aboard the balloon, and Robert Newton hamming it up as only he knew how as Inspector Fix (see also his Long John Silver in Treasure Island).
