I know this has been covered on here before but we’ve just finished the last episode of Home Fires. What a fantastic series and such a pity that they aren’t bringing out anymore episodes. I have downloaded the book and will be able to visualise the characters. I really hope they will have a change of heart and bring out another series.

I recently saw Home Fires on UKTVPlay and really enjoyed it. Such a shame it was cancelled. I know that it was based on a book about the WI but also found out that the scriptwriter, Simon Block, wrote three books which carry on the story of the main characters of the series. Well worth a read.

The worst thing about the way they cancel some of these programmes is the way they assure you that even better programmes are on the way. I have yet to see any of these "better" programmes because they are just becoming more and more formulaic.

It was wonderful and they don't make anything like that now. So many drama series are dark, depressing and involve murder. Or silly and repetitive, and involve murder (Madame Blanc etc.) There is no imagination in writing plots any more.

I enjoy Madame Blanc because it's just a bit of fun with pretty scenery, but Home Fires dealt with really serious issues. There were a lot more stories waiting to be told.

It was a brilliant series set in WW2 not WW1. Why it was cancelled goodness only knows, and there certainly hasn't been anything else even remotely comparable.

No-one said WW1, it was WI which is Women's Institute. 😁

So much depressing gloominess on now, another one starting tonight Ch4 about detectives and murder as usual. Sorry, but I've had it with police, murder, violence etc. I'd sooner dig out one of my old Charles Dickens DVDs than watch today's offerings.

No, the worst thing is when a series ends on a cliffhanger - and then they cancel it..! I'm thinking of Born and Bred, which I loved - it's being repeated at the moment but I can't watch it because of knowing that the abrupt ending is coming down the line ☹️😠
This was also the case with Lilies and Gentleman Jack...! 😡

Chestnut Thu 18-Jul-24 16:12:13

I remember Lilies with fondness but can't remember exactly how it ended (quite a while back). I will look out for Born and Bred (remembering it will have a sudden demise!)

Another which has been given the chop was World on Fire which had a lot of complaints but which I enjoyed. Now gone.

Then from 2017 there is The Halcyon about a London hotel. Another I enjoyed.

Hotel Portofino is going to have a 2nd and 3rd series!

But Home Fires must take the prize for all time dreadful ending, leaving viewers in pieces when the plane crashed into the house. Maybe they thought there would be another series, but unless it's confirmed they should at least end it properly, not like that.

SueDoku and Last Tango in Halifax ended similarly on a lot of cliffhangers and loose ends, to mix my metaphors.

I did read that the cast were lined up to begin filming the next series, the scripts were written - and it was cancelled. Inexplicable, as it was well received and, as another poster has said, we were left with a dramatic incident and no answers.

I am so enjoying the rerun of Home Fires on Drama. I think that Claire Price who plays the butcher's wife has the most beautiful face, like a Greek statue. I remember being struck by her when she was in an episode of Poirot.

Referring to the drama series World On Fire - there was a second series but without Sean Bean (presumably killed off)
and the whole show was very much inferior in every way like some bad soap.
Gave it 15 minutes and ditched☹️

Not having seen it before I enjoyed watching Home Fires on U over recent weeks not realising it came to a sudden stop, how annoying not to know what happened next.

ITV suddenly pulled the plug on Home Fires in 2018, I think. It was to make more room for programmes like Love Island. Give me strength!
