Do you have a film/play/series from your youth/younger life that you loved.?

I recently saw that ‘Love for Lydia’ from 1977 was being televised. I remember absolutely loving it and over the last 47 years just hoping to see it again.

I started it tonight and I am so disappointed it is nothing like I remember. It’s in black and white, It’s set in about 1920s when I seem to remember that it was the 1970s. Mel Martin who I really liked in it has hardly said a word.

I do remember the Editor in the Newspaper office and that’s about all.

I may just give up and my memory of the love affair featuring M M and another character may just be a figment of my imagination.

I wonder if I saw ‘The Greengage Summer’ again, which I also loved, whether that would be a let down.

I still love Funny Girl and Dead Poet's Society is another favourite

I remember going to the cinema in 1968 to see Up the Junction (Dennis Waterman, Suzy Kendall, Adrienne Posta and the brilliant Maureen Lipman). I've watched it countless times.
I also saw Far From the Madding Crowd in 1967 and watched the different tv versions. All good but the original film still my favourite.

Ah Blake’s 7! The last episode…

Romola Fri 16-Aug-24 12:19:51

Blake's 7 on TV Clunky sets but brilliant stories and acting.

As a teenager of about 14 I fell in love with the actor Robert Taylor in the film Ivanhoe, and was delighted when it was shown on TV ten or fifteen years ago.
What a disappointment! The acting was wooden and emotionless, and no-one was as good looking as I recalled in my memory.

I wonder if what you (OP) saw was a different version? I've just googled for "Love for Lydia" and found this on imdb, which has a few short trailers if you just let them play, and it's definitely in colour.

Anne of Green Gables on children’s (BBC?) tv in about 1953. It was so true to a book I loved. We didn’t have television so used to go round to a friend’s house.

I stayed up late on many occasions and remember watching The Rose Tattoo, think it was written by Tennessee Williams, I was quite young, did anyone else see it?

What a great series that was pension pat. I remember that feeling of watching the clock and thinking " Oh please don't let the episode end yet"

pensionpat Fri 16-Aug-24 10:02:49

We love When the Boat Comes in and have the box set to rewatch when we feel like it. Clocking Off is brilliant too. All those Northern actors who became very well known. Sarah Lancashire, Ricky Tomlinson, Siobhan Finneran, Phillip Glenister, Lesley Sharp.

I loved Adam Adamant, and would like to see that again. Perhaps it’s on Youtube. (Reminder to self - have a look)

Tom Thumb - the first film I watched at the cinema and I still hum the soundtrack.

Madam X - watched it when I was 13, was still teary about it a couple of days later and can still describe the plot in its entirety.

The Bridges of Madison County - so moving to see the adult children discover the choice their mother made to prioritise her family over her lover.

I always remember watching the original Poldark with Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees in the mid-70s. I loved it! It had romance, treachery, humour and Cornish scenery. My college friends and I were sharing a house. We would look forward to Sunday nights around the telly. No iPlayer! 😂

I still like to watch The Likely Lads and I can never have too many viewings of Casablanca.

As teenagers friends and I thought the film Ryan's Daughter was wonderful - and very sexy. I watched it on Tele a few years ago and thought it was very very long!

Romola Thu 15-Aug-24 17:51:01

When I was about ten, I went with my friend to see The Court Jester with Danny Kaye. We loved it and sat there to see it round again!
I saw it with AC and GC on tv quite recently and everyone enjoyed it. It's so full of laughter and clever tricks and songs.

Calendargirl Thu 15-Aug-24 17:43:38

There was another good series, probably late 70’s ‘McKenzie’.

Think the leading actor was Jack Galloway, Scottish chap.

I found him very attractive back then.

Never seen it repeated, must look it up,

Pearl30 - Rock Follies! Now that was a bit of a groundbreaker, I loved it. The other actress was Charlotte Cornwell, I think.

Another series I loved was Tutti Frutti; tried to watch it again recently and it was such a disappointment although the cast was incredible(Robbie Coltrane, Emma Thompson, Richard Wilson to name but a few).

Primrose53 Thu 15-Aug-24 17:32:06

When the Boat comes In is still a good watch.

Love for Lydia and Shabby Tiger both disappointed me in recent years. The sound was not good and the acting wasn’t either TBH but I could have cried because I adored both years ago.

Kate1949 Thu 15-Aug-24 17:26:28

Cracker not Crackers!

Kate1949 Thu 15-Aug-24 17:25:48

Boys from The Black Stuff. Crackers.

Pearl30 Thu 15-Aug-24 17:13:41

Rock Follies came straight to mind. It was a TV series in the mid 70s starring Rula Lenska, Julie Covington? And another actress. Can’t remember much about it, but liked the songs and would love to see it again to see if it was any good 😂. Off to google it!
Loving reading the other recollections.

Nannarose Thu 15-Aug-24 17:10:40

HE Bates wrote Love for Lydia in 1952, though I think that the social ambience is pre WW2. It was filmed in the 1970s in the area where HE Bates grew up.

MayBee70 Thu 15-Aug-24 16:08:58

I’ve never seen When the Boat Comes in but I’m sure I’d love it. No idea why it passed me by.
