I loved Love for Lydia. We were at a works meal when the last episode was on tv and went home to watch it, returning later on ( I think other people at the meal did the same).I have seen some of it on utube since. It was the first thing I remember Jeremy Irons being in. I thought Mel Martin was so beautiful and the romantic lead so handsome. I found episodes of Take Three Girls on utube, too. Hadn’t realised Susan Jameson had been in it. Another programme that I loved was The Shutter Falls, a short film. I’ve often thought it inspired Stephen Poliakoff because it was very much about the past and photographs. When I was a child I loved a series called Pathfinders in Space and was overjoyed to find that it was on dvd. And, at Christmas time I found my favourite cartoon from my childhood on utube. I can’t even begin to explain how emotional I felt watching it. I watched The Children of Green Knowe and The Box of Delights at Christmas too. These programmes seem to transport me back in time in a very emotional way.

My sister and I went to the cinema to see ‘Mayerling’, starring Omar Sharif, when it was released, late 60’s or early 70’s I suppose.

We loved it, in tears at the heartbreaking love story. And the inscription in the ring UBLUD (united by love until death) we thought so romantic. I was going to have it inscribed in my wedding ring, if anyone ever proposed!

Of course, when I re-watched it years later on tv, nothing like what I remembered, and I found it pretty boring actually.

Yes, and the historical reality, as far as can be judged as Emperor Framz Joseph had most of the official records destroyed, was certainy no romantic love story.

I loved 'I, Claudius ' when it first came out and couldn't wait for each episode. It began my interest in ancient times which has continued to this day. When I watched it recently, I could see the ropey sets and that it was very stage bound, but the quality of the plot and acting transcended that. I still love it.

My daughter bought me a boxed set of Family at War some time ago but I’ve only just got round to watching them. Just as I remembered, I loved it all over again! Not so much the story or the characters but the sets. The standard lamp, the serving hatch, the radio. All things I remember from my childhood. And the fact that they always shut the door going in or out of a room. Something we never do now in our house.

I remember seeing Doctor Zhivago many years ago. Recently saw it and it seemed so slow. I suppose the world has speeeded up.

I can't think of Brief Encounter without remembering the Victoria Wood version, with Celia Imri, Bill Pattison, Michael Parkinson...

They did a re-make a few years ago, not a patch on the original.

Death in Venice is an old film which I enjoy every time I see it.

Does anyone remember a tv series called "A bouquet of barbed wire"? It was quite shocking at the time. I'd love to see it again.

Gone With the Wind could never be remade as it is perfect.

I watched Greengage Summer recently and loved it, also re-reading the book which was quite dark, with suggestions of child abuse which I totally misunderstood at the time.
'I, Claudius' I still enjoy and I think the studio sets contribute to the claustrophobic atmosphere within the totally out of control First Family of Rome. Helped of course by brilliant actors.

Brief Encounter staring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard
The Bridges of Madison County staring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. Both films never disappoint.

Yes, definitely Brief Encounter and may I add Waterloo Bridge with Vivian Leigh and Robert Taylor. I can still cry at that last one. Really pulls the heart strings.

I loved Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif, when I was younger, but when I tried to watch it again, it just didn’t have the same appeal..

One film I can watch again and again is Pretty Woman. For me, there are so many unmissable moments in that film.

I was 31 Tuaim so hardly a youngster, but a bit of a romantic.

What age were you at the time? If you were a teenager in the first flush of youth, perhaps it satisfied your curiosity at the time. As we age of course colours change and 'in the rear view mirror of history' (sorry!) they look very different. Also, the quality of old films spoil it for me now.
